Wondering about correct object and pronouns placement

Postby mrVal » 2017-10-12, 6:37

Hei!
I'm learning Norwegian with my friends and we've been arguing about where we should place object and possessive pronouns in a sentence. For example, we came up with the following variants: (it involves cheese so suppose two mice are talking :D )

1) Jeg gir deg min ost.
2) Jeg gir deg osten min.
3) Jeg gir min ost deg.
4) Jeg gir osten min deg.

Which ones sound more natural and which ones are flat-out wrong, guys?

I'm not a native or even fluent speaker, but I think sentences 1 and 2 are fine, but sentences 3 and 4 require a 'til' before the 'deg' to connect it to the rest of the sentence.

Aurinĭa is correct.

As for your question regarding the most natural-sounding alternative: probably no. 2 (but it depends on context).

They are all fine, though not equally common. Slight difference in which part of the sentence is assigned importance.
Possible contexts where each phrasing may be used:

1) Jeg gir deg min ost.
It looks like nobody else is willing to share.

2) Jeg gir deg osten min.
I don't really want it, so you can have it.

3) Jeg gir min ost til deg.
You are the one who deserves it most.

4) Jeg gir osten min til deg.
Taste it. It's really good, don't you think?

Note that any of the suggested wordings can be used in all the suggested contexts, and more. The rephrasing only slightly shifts the weight between words (and I expect that other readers disagree with me entirely).
