księżyc - Polski

Dzień dobry!
I've finally started by journey into Polish. :D I'll use this thread to ask questions, post observations, and to post my answers to exercises in my textbook(s) (as a few of my textbooks don't have answer keys).

I'll post the exercises to lesson one of Beginning Polish by Schenker tomorrow.

Notes:
-długopis and pióro - are both in common usage?
-I have no idea at this point what the word for "trash can," or "waste paper basket" is, so I made "śmiecie kosz." I have no idea if that is right. Probably not. :P

długopis - ballpoint pen
pióro - fountain pen (also: wieczne pióro)

Trash can - kosz na śmieci (śmieci/śmiecie are interchangeable in the nominative & accusative pl, I mostly use the former form)

3a. Czy to jest ściana, czy mapa?

It's very common to drop the first czy (i.e. yes/no question marker) in casual speech and to let intonation do the whole job.

3c. To jest ściana, a to jest mapa

Generally, you could omit the second jest (...a to mapa) in this sentence type, I think it would then sound a little more natural.

I had wondered if any shortening was possible for those sentences/questions, thanks for the tips!

I had never heard of "puderniczka".

To be honest, I also had never heard of "(powder) compact".

Yeah, it's an older textbook, so some vocabulary like that is in there (hence my question about pens earlier). I can't imagine that puderniczka is any more common then compact in English now-a-days. I've never heard anyone say it in English, though my grandmother, and maybe my mother, have had one.

Współcześnie kobiety też używają różnorakich przyrządów, których przeznaczenie jest dla mnie czarną magią, nie mówiąc już o nazwie.

I’ve heard the word many times, I even know how it looks like. Obviously the word is still in use.

All the vocabulary you used looks very common to me.
polszczyzna jest moją mową ojczystą (pl), Is í Gaelainn na Mumhan atá á foghlaim agam (ga) ((ga-M)), mám, myslím, dobrou znalost češtiny, rozumím a něco mluvím (cs), Jeg lærer meg bokmål på Duolingo (no-nb) (og eg ville lære nynorsk ein gong (no-nn))

Bo jest Pan Polakiem!

The Poles I asked about it don't find that vocabulary so common, though they know what a "puderniczka" is. And also what a "pudernica" is.

I would probably guess in Italian what a portacipria is, but I had never used the word myself... until now.

I'm not thinking there will be many (if any) corrections, but feel free to prove me wrong. :P

I had wondered if I had created a thread for Polish or not. I'm happy to see this thread exists! :P

I've started some Polish back up, so expect some updates in the near future.

This time however, I'm using First-Year Polish by Swan (with the workbooks and answer keys from Ohio State University). I probably won't post exercises here, but I'll post questions and eventually post translation attempts as I go along.

Progress will be slow, to warn everyone now.

I'm going to just throw an idea out there and see if it takes. :P

If anyone wants to get a study group going for Polish (whether that means going through the same resource, or different ones*), this is an open invitation. :)

*I think it's safe to say going through the same book is very feasible, as First-Year Polish by Swan is still available, and reasonably priced. I'm willing to supply audio (and maybe even the workbooks).

When I was in school, my friend and I decided to learn Polish together. We used "Польська мова за 4 тижні" (Polish in 4 weeks) by Marzena Kowalska, so I'd like to use this textbook when I join the Polish study group. The textbook is available in Ukrainian, Russian, German, English, Spanish and French: https://polishbookstore.pl/polski-w-4-t ... 8379931828
Would you like to use this one instead?

I have that book in German. I think Luís might have recommended it back in the day. I then had it sent to me by a Polish ICQ friend (yes, it's been a while :P) since it was so much cheaper there.
Please correct my mistakes!
