The erdara spoken by native Basque speakers

Postby Prosper_Youplaboum » 2014-10-17, 21:13

Arratsalde hun!

I have a question for those who live or lived in the Basque country:
how much does Basque influence the erdara (Spanish or French) spoken by the native speakers (those who knew Basque well before learning Spanish or French)?
What kind of influence is it? phonology, syntax, vocabulary?
I'd like to know if they say weird things (I don't think they could go as far as using the Basque word-order though but it would be funny :D )

eskerrik hanitx!

i've never come across any native Basque speaker that was not perfectly proficient in Spanish. Mostly they have a stronger accent, or they would slip a Basque word when the Spanish version does not come immediately to mind, and hope for the best. I've head "mira ese pajaro! Sera un arrano o una belea?"...

But in past centuries Basque were known and celebrated for their problems with Spanish. Witness is the passage about the Gallardo Vizcaino in the Quixote, that offers a caricature of how Spanish spoken by Basques sounded to the ears of pure Castilians...

We don't need to go so far back in time... Even in the past century, a Bertsolari was asked if he was as skilful in Basque as in Spanish. The (expectably cocky) answer: "Sin decirlo va. El castellano idioma fácil es, que se aprende en mitad de mes"....

In Assimil they mention that you can hear things like "bien habrá que decir" (ondo esan beharko) when answering something like "¿qué tal?" (zer moduz):
Seguramente habréis sonreído ya al oír en el País Vasco este calco castellano: "¡Bien habrá que decir!"
Guk euskaraz, zuk zergatik ez?

... hm... maybe past generations. This would sound extremely unusual nowadays...

A bit late  but if that was in response to "¡Bien habrá que decir!" they imply that it was a direct translation of the Basque phrase "Ondo esan beharko!"

I just found this from a Basque writer, too. I can't say i've ever heard it either, it's just what Assimil said and they made it sound like a pretty common phrase among Basque speakers. Though the course was put out in the late 70s or early 80s. Not that what i have or haven't heard really counts for much...
