Heihei :)

I really have been up for some days
And been watching the buzzing TV
I'm used to that which is earned
But still I wait for something more
I have seen the colours which no other have
In this world one can never see
I am colourblind, that's why I dare to look
Into your gray world (I presume they ment "maailma")
Where I ran into once
Now I don't know how to get out of here, and I don't want to
That's why I'm here
Jaa (?)

I have really felt that I'm dying
And for some reason it doesn't suprise
I have commited sins which no other
Would never come to try
I have danced tango in dark Paris
I have tried to fight the dragon
When the morning throws it's beams in the end of my sleep I find myself again

In your gray world
Where I ran into once
Now I don't know how to get out of here, and I don't want to
That's why I'm here

I have really felt that I'm dying
And for some reason it doesn't suprise
I have commited sins which no other
Would never come to try
I have seen the colours which no other have
In this world one can never see
I am colourblind, that's why I dare to look
Into your gray world

Muidugi ei pruugi minu tõlge olla just see kõige parem,
aga ma proovisin. :)

Terminaatori laulusõnad on jaburad. ;)

Briti inglise keeles grey, ameerika omas gray.

Jaa tõlkimine tundus lihtsalt paraja totrusena. (;

Translation reuqest (government form)

Postby Maknas » 2007-02-25, 21:55

Hey everybody!

I would really appreciate it if someone here could help me translate a short form into Estonian. This is for a personal project of mine, an alt-history centered around what might have happened if Novgorod, once a major power in far northeastern Europe, had never fallen to Muscovy in the 1400s, and had remained an independent nation up to the present day and including its own language. I'm designing the site as though it were an official government website, and so I'm including on it a few little fun things that you might expect to find on government pages, including a plethora of forms.

Anyway, if someone could help me translate the following, I'd really appreciate it! Here's the text I need in bold, with some comments if needed.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Novegrad ('Novegrad' being a native term I'm using; If Estonian has its own name for the city that's not just a loan of Russian 'Novgorod', please use it instead)
Referrer's Appendix 'A' ('refer' as in referring one person to another)
To be completed in place of a letter of invitation
Please type or print with a ballpoint pen
Your Information:
Surname
First and Middle Name or Patronymic
Date of Birth (DD-MM-YYYY) (Replace D, M, and Y with the first letter of the corresponding Estonian words for day, month, and year)
Old Style or New Style Accepted
Street Address
City
Province
Postal Code
Telephone (home)
Telephone (daytime)
Your Employment Information:
Occupation
Employer
Annual Income
Other sources of income (eg., pension, etc.)
Information of the person you have invited
Citizenship
Sex: Male/Female
Marital Status: Single/Married/Divorced/Separated/Widow(er)/Other
Details of the visit:
When will the person arrive in Novegrad and how long will he/she stay?
Are you related to the person? / Yes. How? / No
If you are not related, how do you know one another and for how long have you known one another?
What is the purpose of this visit?
Who is paying for his/her travel and his/her upkeep in Novegrad?
Is anyone accompanying him/her to Novegrad?
Who?
Further information:
Signature and Date
Certification

I realize this is quite a bit. Thanks for whatever you're willing to do!

Heh. Well, in English "print" also means "write non-cursively". Translating it as just "write" would be fine.

kus - where
mis - what
sa - you

Correct spelling would be kus sa and mis sa, like in "kus sa oled?" (where are you?) and "mis sa teed?" (what are you doing?). In spoken language these two small words tend to merge together and are sometimes used in this form in written language too, for some stylistic purpose.

Translation? :-)

Postby Carrero » 2007-06-09, 14:22

Hey peeps!

I'm interested in Eesti keel, though I find it a really really difficult language... Could someone help me translating this beautiful song? With help of a dictionary I can understand the title, but it's pretty hard to find some words (i suppose i'm not able to guess the standard form of some flexed words) and make that the whole makes sense.

"Suudlus läbi jäätunud klaasi"

Hetke vaid, mõni mälestus kestab,
kuid on neid mida minna ei lasta, küllap siis,
on meil väga neid vaja, sest nad leiavad aja,

on meil väga neid vaja, sest nad leiavad aja,

Many thanks for your help!

A Kiss Through the Freezed Over Glass

For a moment only some memory lasts
But there are those that are not to let go, maybe then
we need them very much, because they find time
to visit us again.
For a moment only some memory lasts.
But there are those that are not to let go, maybe then
we need them because they come again, are you waiting or not.

Wide white snow is falling behind the window, just before evening.
It feels like that time I had dreamt just before evening.
You push your mouth on the freezed over glass.
And me aswell. So the ice flowers all melt on our window glass.

For a moment only some memory lasts
But there are those that are not to let go, maybe then
we need them very much, because they find time
to visit us again.
For a moment only some memory lasts.
But there are those that are not to let go, maybe then
we need them because they come again, are you waiting or not.

From that day a lot of snow has fallen and a lot else.
It feels like that time I had dreamt just before evening.
You push your mouth on the freezed over glass.
And me aswell. So the ice flowers all melt on our window glass.

A singer of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XyYWe_JswI (one of my favourite songs).

He was unfortunately on board of m/s Estonia which sank Sept 28 1994 near the island of Utö on Baltic Sea on her journey from Tallinn to Stockholm. It's curious that Alender has written a song about sinking and a lot of water...

I took the liberty of attempting ot make it more grammatically correct... I went ahead and correct the obvious mistakes, and placed Suggest words in ().

Also some of the songs meaning would be lost if I changed the lyrics to much.

But here is what i came up with... Any corrections are appreciated, I am jsut learning Estonian after all.

I love this song and from what i understand it was popular when it came out, but I can't seem to find an english translation anywhere...can anyone help me?

juulikuus lumi

Juulikuus lumi on maas
Minu jaoks see pole ime
Seisad paljajalu rannas
Sa oled kaunis oled kummaline
Tean et aasta veel ja sinust
Ilma jään ma niikuinii
Pimeduses kuulen häält mis
Sosistab

Ainus pole joodud vein mis
Hommikul sul valutama paneb pea
Iga naise puudutus ei saagi
Olla ühtemoodi hea
Iga elatud päev on samm
Lähemale iseenda surmale
Ainus mida ma tean sind kunagi
Ei saanud päris endale

Juulikuus lumi on maas...

Hüvasti

Sounds good to me. What is petal though? The meaning of this word in my English-Estonian dictionary doesn't make any sence in the context of this song. Those figures of ice that appear on a frozen glass are called ice flowers in Estonia, is it not understood when they are called so in English?

Snow of July

Everything is not desert that makes your throat dry
Damned coldness doesn't have to be antarctica
Everything that tempts and shines is not yet gold
I don't call your name because I'm afraid of fire

Everything is not steel that
Hits a wound in your heart
Everything is not brain cancer that
eats my sense away
Everything that tempts and shines is not yet gold
I don't call your name because I'm afraid of fire

In july the snow is on ground
For me it's no wonder
You're standing barefoot on the beach
You're beautiful you're strange
I know that one year more and
I will lose you anyway
In the darkness I hear a voice that
Whispers

The only thing is not drunken wine that
In the morning makes your head ache
Every woman's touch can't
Be equally good
Every day you live is a step
Nearer to your own death
The only thing I know I never
really could make you my own.

In july the snow is on ground...

Farewell

When I first read through the song lyrics, I thought of "ice flowers" being more like snow flakes on the window... Not the Frost itself.

So in that context I was thinking Petals of Ice, like the petals of a flowers.

A petal being the individual leaf of the actual flower.

However, I do see where you were going with ice flowers on the window..

Snow of(in) July

Everything is not (a) desert that makes your throat dry.
Damned coldness doesn't have to be antarctica
Everything that tempts and shines is not yet(always) gold
I don't call your name because I'm afraid of fire

Everything is not steel that
Hits a wound in your heart
Everything is not brain cancer that
eats my sense(s) away
Everything that tempts and shines is not yet(always) gold
I don't call your name because I'm afraid of fire

In july the snow is on (the) ground
For me it's no wonder
You're standing barefoot on the beach
You're beautiful you're strange
I know that one year more and
I will lose you anyway
In the darkness I hear a voice that
Whispers

*The only thing is not drunken wine that
*In the morning makes your head ache **THis is grammatically incorrect, but I cant find a better way to say it without losing the meaning.**
Every woman's touch can't
Be equally(I would just say AS) good
Every day you live is a step
Nearer to your own death
The only thing I know I never
really could make you my own.

In july the snow is on (the) ground...

Farewell

Just some minor grammatical tweaks...

My suggestioons are in ().

Again, some things are lost in translation, and I would be afraid to change to much... So most of the changes are to help the readability of the song...

It is still best heard in its original language.

Thanks go out to Loiks for the original Translation.

Thanks for corrections, Josh. Sometimes it is really very difficult to be grammatically correct with those lyrics. You have to start from the end of the sentence and end up somewhere in the middle because of the different structures of English and Estonian sentences. And sometimes the original itself is not grammatically correct for some poetical reasons.
