Please check these sentences

Postby Clara Anna » 2009-07-07, 19:42

Hi!
I'd need native speakers to evaluate the following sentences - I'd only like to know whether these are acceptable Estonian sentences or not. I need it for a linguistic research.
Thanks in advance.
a) Anna ostis kassi enam kordi, kui Matti põrsast.
b) Anna ostis kassi enam kordi, kui Matti.
c) Anna ostis kassi enam kordi, kui vannitas.
d) Anna ostis kassi enam kordi, kui põrsast.

:hmm:  :?:

Maybe you write in English, what you wanted to say?

They are horrible enough in English as well, but:
a) Anna bought cats more often than Matti (bought) pigs.
b) Anna bought cats more often than Matti.
c) Anna bought cats more often than (she) bathed (cats).
d) Anna bought cats more often than pigs.
(I don't speak Estonian at all - I got the basis for these sentences from someone who does and I'm trying to find out which structures are possible and which aren't)
Anyway, thanx. :)

a) Anna ostis kasse tihemini kui Matti sigu/põrsaid.
b) Anna ostis kasse tihemini kui Matti.
c) Anna ostis kasse tihemini, kui (ta) (kasse) vannitas.
d) Anna ostis kasse tihemini kui sigu/põrsaid.

*põrsas - little pig

Your nouns were in partitive singular, should be partitive plural.

Yes, they were but that's not a problem actually - I used the Pl. in English only because I cannot express generic reference otherwise. I forgot to mention that I was aware of that - sorry about it. (The sentences were originally traslated from Hungarian, where generic reference can be expressed by a Sg. noun without any article and so my consultant gave me the closest Estonian counterparts.) But thank you really, now the sentences look a bit better for me.
But apart from that, do you consider these grammatical sentences?
a) Anna ostis kasse tihemini kui Matti põrsaid.
b) Anna ostis kasse tihemini kui Matti.
c) Anna ostis kasse tihemini, kui vannitas.
d) Anna ostis kasse tihemini kui põrsaid.

I can only say that they are absolutely correct sentences. Well, maybe a bit weird in their meaning :).
