Not an easy job...

anna mulle toetuspunkt = give me a point of support / some place to stand / something to lean on (toetus = support). From this point on the lyrics become really a play of rhyming words that makes little sense. Poetus could mean an act of quietly dropping something somewhere and koitus obviously mean coitus. But these two words cannot form a normal compound word with punkt meaning point, so punkt in the end of the verse can equally be understood as period - punctuation mark in the end of the sentence. Puutepunkt is a point where two objects touch together. Muutepunkt (a possible word but rarely used) could be translated as a point where a change occurs. There is really no word as suutepunkt but by an analogue it could be understood as a point where somebody is able to do something.

anna mulle end - give yourself to me
anna mulle - give me
punkt - full stop, period; point, dot
ja - and
siirus - integrity, honesty
viirus - virus
kiirus - velocity
algus - start
valgus - light
selgus - clarity
hipi - hippie
nipi (genitive; nom. nipp) - (of a) trick
vipi (vipp) - (of a) v.i.p.
loome - creation
Soome - Finland
toome (toom) - (of) bird cherry; toome means also we bring
stiili (stiil) - (of a) style
viili ( viil) - (of a) file (tool)
kiili (kiil) - (of a) dragonfly
marsi (marss) - (of) march or Mars
parsi - Parsi
katarsi (correct genitive form should be katarsise) - (of) catharsis
soki (sokk) - (of a) sock
roki (rokk) - (of) rock
loki (lokk) - (of a) lock
suusa (suusk) - (of) ski
puusa (puus) - (of) hip
tuusa (tuus) - (of an) ace
ussi (uss) - (of a) snake
sussi (suss) - (of a) slipper
vussi (vuss) - there is really no separate word vuss but läks vussi means went wrong, got messed up, didn't work out, so vuss can mean as something that has got messed up
numbri (number) - (of a) number
skumbria - mackerel
kiilu (kiil) - (of a) keel; but kilu (meaning sprat) would be more logical here after the mackerel
kapi (kapp) - (of a) cupboard
papi (papp) - (of) cardboard; slang for money
sapi (sapp) - (of) bile
kahvli (kahvel) - (of a) fork
vahvli (vahvel) - (of a) wafer
tahvli (tahvel) - (of) blackboard (or whiteboard)
panni (pann) - (of a ) pan
vanni (vann) - (of a ) bathtub
punni (punn) - (of a) cork, peg, plug, dowel
torni (torn) - (of a) tower, but tormi (of a storm) would be more logical
tungi (tung) - (of an) urge (NB torm ja tung - Sturm und Drang)
pungi (punk) - (of) punk
ukse (uks) - (of a ) door
okse - vomit
tukse - pulse, beat
kohvi (kohv) - (of) coffee
lohvi (lohv) - (of a) tube, tyre
katafi - ?? Gaddafi?
kommi (komm) - (of a ) candy
pommi (pomm) - (of a) bomb
trammi (tramm) - (of a) tram
selge - clear
helge - bright
kulge - imperative form of the word 'to proceed'
tunni (tund) - (of an) hour
punni (punn) - (of a) cork, peg, plug, dowel
... - the two preceeding words suggest that the omitted word would be munni (munn) - (of a) prick
hääle (hääl) - (of a) voice
meele (meel) - (of a) mind
keele (keel) - (of a) language; tongue
hüppe (hüpe) - (of a) jump
vappe (vape) - (of a) shiver
tokke - ???
kisse - ???
kesse - ???
kusse - ???

The last words are more or less nonsensical; however kesse and kusse could be colloquial forms of kes see (who) and kus see (where it).

Thanks again, Ada. I did notice the lyrics were playing with words...I really thought "anna" could be the name "Anna" so I started wondering what the song could mean...Still, the lyrics make a lot of sense.

I know that site estmusic.com , it was very useful in my research.

Have you also tried last.fm? Anyway, it's curious that you'd be interested in Estonian pop music :)

I know last.fm too, I also got some info from there.

I'm interested at music from any countries, it's actually part of a radio programme I have with some friends from uni, every week we cover a different country, and Estonia (just like the rest of Europe) was assigned to me).

Speaking about Genialistid, is any of the members of the band handicapped? I ask so because of this text:

Code: Select all

Niipalju sellest.

And because I watched the videoclip of "Armastus ( vanad ja kobedad)" with Lea Liitmaa and the guy who sings seems to be blind (he looks at no direction, and so seems Lea Liitmaa, which I doubt so. She's from the band "Blacky", right?

Hmm... How does this text indicate that anybody is handicapped? I can't get a hint to that from it. And they are not to my knowledge (maybe a little bit crazy sometimes).

And they are blind neither. I don't recall this very video you mentioned but I'm sure everything has been done for artistic reasons only.

Independence Day

Postby Ada H. » 2007-02-23, 20:34

As tomorrow is Estonian Independence Day, I decided to try to translate another Estonian song that was performed during the last year's Independence Day celebration by a rapper called Chalice.

minu inimesed

osa rahvast
uhkelt rohkem kui oskan lugeda
yhes olen kindel
nad on head inimesed
nad meeldiks sulle ka
mai usu et sa k6iki neid tunned
ja vaevalt nad yxteistki
tunnevad
ja 2kki t6esti ei klapi
samas 2kki on tegu pelgalt
halva esmamuljega
nad m6istavad ja
peavad endast lugu ka siis
kui neil puudub kontakt sinuga
kui teid on okkad sidumas
jagades iga mure m66tmata
selle t6sidust
ja vahel piisab pilgust ka
kui pole tundeid s6nadesse
t6lgitud
nad ei karda hoolida
ei hoia h2id emotsioone alla
kunagi ei soovi nad halba
ja kui juhtub siis juhtus
kogemata
jubam88dasunustatud
nad on k6igest syngest yle
argip2eva mured r6huvalt
ymber
nende omavahelisi suhteid
tegelt ei m6juta yldse
v6i ma exin siin? on minu ja
teiste elud segi l2inud?
kui p2riselt ongi teisiti
parem et siis k6ik olex m2ngult
kuigi on igal yhel enda asjad
ajada
on nad k6ik selles osa
moodustades rahva
nad on minu inimesed
ja mina olen nende oma
l2hen vooluga kaasa

refrään:

mu inimesed minu rahvas mu
seltskond
mu inimesed siin seal k6ikjal
igalpool
mu inimesed teavad ise et
nad on
mu inimesed minu inspiratsioon
mu inimesed
yx seis siht ja suund
mu inimesed minu elu
armastus
nad on mu oma inimesed
ja k6ik mis teen on
neile pyhendatud

kui syda on suur
siis on vahemaad v2ixed
head s6brad
v6ibolla mujal ongi parem
seikle aga 2ra j22 v66rax
koos koos koos
koos vallandame tolguseid
koos palkame spetsialistid
kuid keegi ei tee meie eest
otsuseid
kui purux kisti verstapostid
ei l6ika keegi l2bi meie juuri
tean kes ma olen
kui m2letan kes ma olin
elan mitte aint ei v6ta ruumi!
isegi kui tuul rannaliivalt
uhtus j2ljed
inimene yxk6ik kui suur kui
v2ike
j2rjelt kukkund j2rjel
on inimene yxk6ik kuhu l2hed
ja sa v6id ju liigitada neid
nagu muusikat tema nahav2rvi
vaimu tema religiooni
rikkust tema hariduse
misiganes mille j2rgi
sa v6id unustada maa
j2ttes selle nime ainult
uppund laevale
sa v6id 8elda et maa
mis elab ja hingab tegelt
kuulub pangale
a kui kuskil raamatus on see
rida
v6i keegi ytleb laulab
ja ei hoia ainult endale
et m6tleb nii nagu ka sina
seda teex
iga p2ev n2en mis koht on
maailm
tihti millised v6ivad olla teised
on ikka p2ris suur 6nn
et nemad on minul
tahan et nad teax et mina
olen nendel
et nad on...

refrään

minu vanematele
ja inimestele kes on yhendatud
see on pyhendatud kes
tunnevad
et see on neile pyhendatud
otse kontrollkeskusest
kasutamata ytleja h22le
privileege
pyhendatud k6igega mis mus on
niipalju kui palju t2hendab
k6ige k6rval
yx inimene
r22gin sest nii hakkab kergem
kuningatele kylakeeles lihtsalt
t2nan v6imaluse eest n2idata
mis meelel
sydamel kirjas
toorelt ausalt kui vaja kirjutan
verega alla
see j22b rahvale
mitte ei l2he mehega hauda
teenin oma inimesi
ja ei tee erandit
ytlen veelkord minu inimesed
ja ma ei unustanud mitte kedagi
mitte kedagi

refrään

my people

part of the people
way more than i could count
one thing that i'm sure of
they're good people
you would like them too
i don't believe you know them all
neither it's likely they know each other
and maybe really it don't fit
maybe it's just a bad first impression
they understand
they respect themselves
even if they don't have the contact with you
if there are thorns binding you
sharing every worry
not measuring its depth
and sometimes a look is enough
when the feelings have not been
translated into words
they are not afraid to care
they don't hold back good emotions
they never wish you ill
and when it happens
it happened by mistake
itsoveralreadyforgotten
they are above all gloom
the trials and tribulations
tightly around them
never really affect
their relationships
or am i wrong here? has my life
got mixed up with others'
if it is really the other way
then let it all be just a game
even though everyone has got
their own business to mind
they are all a part of it
making up a people
they are my people
and i am theirs
i go with the flow

chorus:

my folks, my people, my company
my people here there everythere
my people they know that they are
my people my inspiration
my people one story one aim and direction
my people the love of my life
they are my own people
and everything i do
is dedicated to them

when the heart is big
the distances are small
good friends
it may well be better some other place
go on explore but don't grow strange
together together together
together we hire the experts
but no one can make the decision
for ourselves
when the milestones were torn
but our roots cannot be
i know who i am
when i remember who i used to be
i live i don't just take up space
even if the wind washed
the footprints from the sand
a man no matter how big
or small
low down or well off
you can classify them
like music by its colour
spirit by religion
wealth by education
like whatever by whatever
you can forget the country
and leave its name to a sunken ship
you can say that the land
that lives and breathes
is really owned by a bank
but when there is a line
in a book
or when someone speaks sings
doesn't hold to themself
that they too think the way
you would
every day i see
what a place this world is
often what people can be like
it really is a fortune
to have them
and i want them to know
that they too have me
that they are...

chorus: ...

to my parents
and to the people who are united
this goes to them
who feel that this is dedicated to them
straight from the control room
without using the privileges
of a big voice
dedicated with everything there is inside me
as much as one man
matters along everything
i speak to ease my soul
to the kings in a simple village-speak
i thank for the opportunity to show
what's on my mind
written on my heart
rough and straight i will sign
in blood if needed
this goes to my people
not to the grave with the man
i will serve my people
and will make no exceptions
i say once more my people
and i forgot not a single one
not a single one

chorus

Could you translate "Velvetiin", please?

Siis, kui valguskiir varjudeks muutub
Eemale teistest sa jääd
Ja ütled, et keegi ei muutu

Kuid nii segaseid tundeid ei peida
Ja rahu sa nendest ei saa
Võid sõpru ja vaenlasi leida
Kui tagasi ei vaata

Mustal sametisel ööl sa läed
Linnatulesid veel kaugel näed
Usud, maailm muutub, nüüd ja siin
Sinu jaoks vaid, Velvetiin

Murtud südamete puiesteel
Läbi vihmasaju seikled veel
Usud, maailm muutub, nüüd ja siin
Sinuga koos, Velvetiin

Nii teeb huulepulk peeglile jälgi
Kirjutad, et minema pead
Et palun ärge käige mul järgi
Sest olen eksinud ma

See mürgina halvab kõik meeled
Kõik tundub liigagi hea
Nii lähed veelkordki teele
Ja tagasi ei vaata

thank you in advance ;)

Velvetine (a name that the author of the lyrics has derived from the word 'velvet')

Then, when a ray of light becomes shadows
You stay away from the others
And you say that nobody changes

But so you can't hide confused feelings
And they don't let you in peace
You can find friends and enemies
If you don't look back

At a black velvety night you go
You still see the city lights far away
You believe, world changes now and here
Only for you, Velvetine

On a boulevard of broken hearts
You're wondering through pouring rain
You believe, world changes now and here
With you, Velvetine

So the lipstick makes traces on mirror
You write that you have to go
That don't come after me
Because I'm lost

It paralyzes all my minds like poison
Everything feels maybe too good
So you go on your way maybe one more time
And you don't look back

tänan!
could you translate two songs more, please...

Jää hüvasti, kollane koer

Vaikselt nutta nurgas tihub
Pisikene nukker koer
Mingi mure teda rõhub
Miks siis nutab väike koer?

On's tal keegi teinud paha,
et nii kurb on koerameel.
Või on jätnud teda maha
Keegi, kallis eluteel!

'Jää hüvasti kollane koer!'
Ütlesid kui lahkusid.
'Jää hüvasti kollane koer!'
Ütlesid ja läksid siis.

Istub nurgas nüüd kollane kutsu
Pisar läigib ta koonu ees maas.
Istub, haugatab, sind jälle kutsub.
Miks ei tule, oh miks ei tule sa ?

Läksid öösel kui pime oli kõikjal.
Magas sõbrake su voodi ees.
Sa läksid, uks paugatas võikalt,
Nüüd kutsika silmad on vees.

Minu kodu

Ootad mind kuid eemale siit viib tee
Alati tulen, tagasi tulen su juurde
Minu kodu, minu kodu

2.Kuulen su juures, milline kõla on vaikusel,
Minu kodu, minu kodu

Ootad mind kuid eemale siit viib tee
Alati tulen, tagasi tulen su juurde
Minu kodu, minu kodu

I dunno what should b instead of '???' I didn't find complete lyrics for Minu kodu, listen to it:

Re: Translation of Estonian Song

Farewell, yellow dog!

Silently cries in the corner
A tiny sad dog
Some trouble puts pressure on him
Why then does the little dog cry?

Has anyone made something bad to him/her
That so sad is the mind of the dog
Or has someone dropped him/her
Someone dear on his/her path of life?

"Farewell, yellow dog,"
You said when you left
"Farewell, yellow dog,"
You said and left then

Sits in the corner now the yellow doggy
A tear glistens on the ground before his/her nose
Sits, gives a little bark, calls you again
Why don't you, oh why don't you come?

You left in the night when it was dark everywhere
The little friend was sleeping in front of your bed
You went, the door banged ghastly
Now the eyes of the puppy are wet

[As you maybe know, it's very difficult to say in Estonian which gender this little doggy was but I guess female :)] BTW the video is from an Estonian singers' contest that Sandra didn't win :). Original is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PtwjqoSkwY (from late 80's). The singer and author Urmas Alender sank with the ferry Estonia on the way to Stockholm in 1994...

My Home (as Sandra says it's her own creation :))

1. Stop one moment, silently in front of you I look at you
You are truly here, still here and waiting
You wait for me but away drives me my way from you
I'll always come back to you
My home, my home

2. I hear near you which sound has the silence
I love warmth, the flames burning in the fireplace
In here I'm a child who laughed and played and ran
Before I flew out [from the nest]*
My home, my home
I hold you in my heart, I find a way back to you
I hold you in my heart and find a way back to you

3. [basically like the 1.]

* ??? - I think it's 'Enne kui lendasin välja'

Tere :D

Could anyone please translate these two songs..

sellegipoolest see vajub ükskord me mõlema pääle

su silmalauge ja saatust ja ripsmete rusket sära

me näeksime teineteist linnas ning sa jälle lööks silmad maha

Thanks in advance :)

Hei,
Could someone translate the following into either English or Finnish?

Lähme merda pühkimaie,
mere ääri äigamaie,
pühime pühked meresse.
laseme laastud lainetesse!
Mis sealt merest üles tõusis?
Tõusis kulla tammekene.
Istutasin isa ilus -
tamm ei kasnud, tamm ei jõudnud;
istutasin ema ilus -
tamm ei kasnud, tamm ei tõusnud;
istutasin venna ilus -
tamm ei kasnud, tamm ei tõusnud;
istutasin õe ilus -
tamm ei kasnud, tamm ei tõusnud;
istutasin enese ilus -
tamm aga kasvis, tamm aga jõudis.
Tamm aga kasvis taeva'esse,
pidi pilve ju pugema,
tahtis taevast laotada,
pidi pilved pillutama,
kuu pidi lööma kuies tükis,
pääva lööma viies tükis.
Mina aga joostes ju külasse,
noorte meeste palve'elle:
"Tulgem, tulgem, noored mehed,
tulgem nüüd tamme raiumaie!"
Viru aga külast viisi kirvest,
teista viisi noorta meesta;
Kura aga külast kuusi kirvest,
teista kuusi noorta meesta;
oma külast kümme kirvest,
teista kümme noorta meesta
tulid tamme raiumaie.
Mis sest tammest väl'la jäi?
Tüikast jäi tünderida,
keskelt jäi kena kiriku,
otsast jäi orja iste,
ladvast laste koolituba.

Aitäh.

Where is that from? It sounds SO familiar somehow... It's like I've read something similar in Finnish, especially the "laseme lastud lainetesse" - a sentence like "laskemme lastut lainehille" (in Finnish) is basically a folk poetry cliche. It has the traditional "eight syllable structure" so it's definitely folk poetry. :hmm:

I understand about 85% of it but I don't dare to provide a translation since I'm not a native Estonian speaker. :)

I understand a good part of it. It's called suur tamm. Actually I got it from a song but the text does not fully concord. I posted it on my tumblr - it's quite nice. Estonian never sounded better to me anyways!

Miksi lastuja laitettaisiinkaan laineille? Vai onko minun luettava lause epäsananmukaisesti?
Kysyin koska aion kääntää tekstin omalle kielelle (jättinörttijuttu).

Hmm... en oikeastaan tiedä miksi lastuja aina laitetaan laineille kansanrunoudessa.

Tervist! We've been discussing Estonian version of a song in Coca-cola advertisement here, since I am extremely curious, if Latvian ad is rip-off from Estonian version, I am hoping that I could draw attention of somebody, who could translate it, please?
