pastor
pastor (lol)

When I was a kid, we had a game where one player spinned the rope and others tried to jump over it while chanting "pastor, church bell-ringer, peasant, cupper, rich, loved, poor, thief"*. Whoever stepped on the rope first got the "title" that was said at the time they made their mistake, and then it was their turn to spin the rope.

*It was of course in Finnish: pappi, lukkari, talonpoika, kuppari, rikas, rakas, köyhä, varas

tubakas
tobacco

My mum used to sing me a lullaby that begins with "lull, lull, tobacco roll". It's a famous lullaby here, and apparently the reasoning behind the metaphor was that a swaddled baby looked like a tobacco roll, which was expensive = important = dear.
Btw the lullaby is in the same metre as Kalevipoeg. :D

And with that same melody that is used for all Finnish folksongs, I see. :silly: That just cracks me up because, as I think I've told you before, I'd heard that melody in the Estonian song Laulusild but hadn't realized it was used for almost all Kalevala-meter songs in Finnish. (The melody for the Estonian part of Laulusild is just one of many.)

Here's one that is actually from Kalevipoeg (or vice-versa I suppose; it's a folksong which was incorporated into Kalevipoeg):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZNsNm70l6w

And a kiigelaul also sung by the same singer, with the same meter but a different melody:

Järgmine:
kiigelaul
swing song (to sing while swinging, like this, not to be confused with American swing music!)

We do have folk songs with other melodies, too! Like Kullan ylistys! But yeah Kalevala metre and 5-note melodies go hand in hand. Here's another lullaby my mum used to sing me - the melody is almost identical to the first lullaby. And here and here are two parts from Kalevala, still the same(ish?) melody. I'm not sure if I've linked these before, but they're cool so I don't care. :D

Next word
kiigutama
to swing, to sway, to rock

Yay, I know this swing!

It's in Altja kaluriküla, in Lahemaa National Park, Lääne-Viru County.
