Here's an interesting example of the use of hyphens for compounds with repetitive components in a sentence (interesting because the hyphens refer to either talgud or lina depending on their position):

Peale viljalõikustalgute olid tuntud ka sõnnikuveo-, heinateo-, kartulivõtu-, linakitkumise-, -lõugutamise ja -ropsimise talgud, samuti palgiveo- ja muudki talgud.

So this avoids repetition, but if the full forms were to be written this would be how the above sentence would read:

Peale viljalõikustalgute olid tuntud ka sõnnikuveotalgud, heinateotalgud, kartulivõtutalgud, linakitkumise talgud, linalõugutamise [talgud] ja linaropsimise talgud, samuti palgiveotalgud ja muudki talgud.

It was weird to see these because they're the same in Finnish. For a moment I thought you had used the wrong language!

(Except that paise means only abscess but not tumour in Finnish. Are you sure it's both in Estonian? I'm feeling doubtful because Wiktionary had only abscess for [Estonian] paise, but Wiktionary is not always perfect... It could be they've just forgotten to add it.)

I'm not really sure, to be honest. I included "tumor" because the Nastik and Aare dictionaries have "tumor" (and "excrescence") as translations for paise. On the other hand other dictionaries have "abscess", "boil", and "ulcer". EKSS indicates that it is specifically a pindmiste selgepiiriliste mädapõletike (so "abscess" or "boil" seems good), but also that it's a rahvapärane nimetus, so maybe it has also meant different things to different people at different times.
I can't use context to figure out which was meant in what I read, because it was in the context of old rules for sauna use: Ei tohi paha haisu lasta - siis tekivad paised.. This has got me wondering what kind of paised one would get from that, though.

Yeah, exactly - it's like you know it would be possible, but don't usually see it in a single sentence like that. I'm also a bit surprised by this part: "linakitkumise-, -lõugutamise ja -ropsimise talgud". Both lina and talgud apply to lõugutamise and I feel like it should either be
linakitkumise, -lõugutamise ja -ropsimise talgud
or
linakitkumise-, -lõugutamise- ja -ropsimise talgud
(If you can't spot the difference, pay close attention to the hyphens on linakitkumise and lõugutamise in the original sentence and my two alternatives.)
And I'm not sure which, because the compound word *linalõugutamisetalgud gets broken into two words (linalõugutamise talgud) so a hyphen at the end of linalõugutamise- seems wrong, but they used the hyphen on linakitkumise- (same situation), and the talgud part is missing, so.... I understand the meaning of the sentence, but I'm still not entirely sure I understand why that particular part of the sentence is hyphenated precisely the way it is.
Anyway, even without that part, I thought the whole thing was interesting. I hadn't seen a sentence written quite like that before either.
