Keelehuumor

Postby Linguaphile » 2021-06-12, 17:04

Here you can post and read Estonian wordplay, puns, language-related jokes, funny translations etc. in Estonian or English. To start off I'm going to post a few wordgames and translations that I've already posted or found elsewhere, to gather them together in one place.

Üks minu lemmikutest, sest juba kaua aega tagasi oli esimene eestikeelne kalambuur, millest aru sain. Loodan, et kedagi ei solva.

Advertising campaign that uses actual Tallinn street names (street names are always in the genitive case)
Turunduskampaania, mis kasutab Tallinna tänavanimesid (tänavanimed on alati omastavas käändes)

(...leiad Bauhofist = you find...from Bauhof)

"You can find products for construction work at Bauhof" (street name "Kauba" = merchandise, goods)
Image

"You can find technology for repair work at Bauhof" (street name "Tehnika" = technology, equipment, machinery)
Image

"You can find sand for filling work at Bauhof" (street name "Liiva" = sand)
Image

"You can find tarmac for road work at Bauhof" (street name "Killustiku = tarmac, macadam, broken stones)
Image

"You can find roofing felt for roof work at Bauhof" (street name "Katusepapi = roofing felt, roofing paper)
Image

"You can find stones for tiling work at Bauhof" (street name "Kivi = stone)
Image

"You can find brick for building walls at Bauhof" (street name "Telliskivi" = brick)
Image

"You can find soil for yard work at Bauhof" (street name "Mulla = soil, dirt)
Image

Ka siin ingliskeelsete tõlgetega: Bauhof Street Names

I'll post some bilingual ones this time for anyone reading this who doesn't get the Estonian ones (the translation of ta on president strikes me as particularly funny now that Estonia's president is a woman):

Original: Kreegipuu magushapud söödavad luuviljad on tavaliselt sinilillad. Kreegipuu sarnaneb ploomipuuga, kuid tema lehed on väiksemad ja tal on astlad.

Google Translate: Grained sweet and sour cherries are usually blue-green. Grass tree is similar to plum tree, but its leaves are smaller and have asthma.

#plums have asthma

Also:
If you're ever bored, put some Nublu lyrics through Google translate!

Original:
Kivi-paber-käärid
Mul on jõulud, mul on näärid
Mul on tiinekad ja sfäärid
Õiget nublut nad ei vääri

Google Translate:
Stone-paper-scissors
I have Christmas, I have glands
I have dim and spheres
They don't deserve the right blubber....

Eesti keel: kuuselt v. pärnalt kistud puukoor
Google Translate: per month v. lindenly barked bark

:hmm:

Actual meaning: bark stripped from spruce or linden
I mean at least it got two words almost right. Sort of.
The whole translation is ridiculous but for some reason the translation of "pärnalt" as "lindenly" really makes me giggle.
