Tell me what goes on
My heart endures
Despite what you may tell it is not your fault, it is not mine either

Tell me if you love another, tell me if I lose you

Of those who hold hearts as [game] cards

Even if you find another to love and I lose you

Ναι, κατάλαβα ό,τι (όσα) είπες για τα ανώμαλα ρήματα. Βέβαιως, ο αόριστος "είπα" του ρήματος "λέω" μου φαίνεται πιο παράξενος απο τον αόριστο "έγραψα" του "γράφω" :P Αλλά απλά πρέπει να [s]το[/s] ξέρω το θέμα.

I think this song was a good choice. It seems innocent but it has some useful things to mention.

1. Διαβάστε is imperative. Subjunctive aorist is διαβάσετε. Μην requires subjunctive. There is no negative imperative.

2. όλο apart from neuter adjective meaning «all», is very much used colloquially as an adverb and it means «all the time - always». It is a direct translation of the equivalent Turkish word:

όλο τρώω - I eat all the time
της εξηγώ αλλά αυτή όλο με αγνοεί - I explain her but she ignores me always
όλο βλακείες λες - You say nonsense all the time

3. In the phrase "η καρδιά μου εμένα αντέχει", εμένα is genitive and not accusative. In older times εμένα was the accusative and εμού/μου the genitive but later accusative replaced the genitive, so in modern Greek εμένα stands for both.
Then you will ask what is its difference with μου and why is it used after it. The answer is, for emphasis. It's like saying in English «my heart of me, endures».

על כל פנים you cannot use εμένα alone meaning «mine». I.e. you cannot say

- Ποιανού είναι αυτό;
- [s]Εμένα[/s]

Nor you can use εμού. You must use δικό μου

3. Ό,τι και να / ό,τι και αν both mean «anything I may...» After them subjunctive aorist follows:

ό,τι και να πω / ό,τι κι αν πω θυμώνεις - anything I say you get mad

Same goes for the rest of the report pronouns:

όπου και να/αν πάω έρχεσαι κι εσύ - Anywhere I go, you too come
όσο και να/αν φάω δε χορταίνω - No matter how much I eat, I don't feel full
όσα και να/αν πω δε θα καταλάβεις - No matter how much I say, you will not understand

4. Don't overuse λαθεμένος. We rarely use it. We use λάθος instead:

είναι λάθος
ήταν λάθος που πήγες μόνος
ήταν λάθος το ότι πήγες μόνος

5. In the sentence «Ναι, κατάλαβα ό,τι είπες για τα ανώμαλα ρήματα» I'd prefer όσα but is just a slightest, perhaps style difference. Both are correct

"I won't be a poet" should become "I won't become a poet" so δε θα γίνω ποιητής.

Η κατάληξη -ότερος δε χρησιμοποιείται με όλα τα επίθετα δυστυχώς..

Βρήκα μέρος στο οποίο δεν μπορώ να βάλω το οριστικό άρθρο;;

Δεν είναι άρθρο, είναι αντωνυμία. Πρόσεξε τη διαφορά:

πρέπει να ξέρω το θέμα (έμφαση στο τι πρέπει να ξέρω)
πρέπει να το ξέρω το θέμα (έμφαση στο ότι πρέπει να το ξέρω).

In other words the second object before the verb is used when we want to emphasize the verb, while when we want to emphasize the object we don't add a second one. Crazy huh? But you better remember it :P . I could make a recording of these two sentences for you so that you see that there's a difference of emphasis in my voice too.

Could this be like "my own heart"?

Ναι, υποθέτω..

Since ego refuses to answer you (:-p), I'll try to clarify. :)

The verb "εννοώ" means "to signify", sorta. So we understood that you meant to say "I meant to ask what verb that is", but what you really said was "I signified to ask" (and not "I meant to ask"). Probably because when people say "τι εννοείς; - εννοώ ότι..." you thought you could use it for "I meant to say", but unfortunately the English verb "to mean" in that sentence is very expression-like, so it doesn't really fit into the Greek paradigm. That's why ego corrected it, changing "εννούσα" to "ήθελα (να πω)" (because that's how they say "I meant to say" in Greek). :)

Babelfish wrote:Δεν χρησιμοποιείτε την κατάληξη "-ότερος" πλέον; :(

Like ego said, it's not used with all adjectives. It's like English when you say "big - bigger", but "beautiful - more beautiful". There's no "beautifuller", really. :p

May someone check this text for me?

Lol! Ωραία. :-p
Well, to be honest, if you want to use the verb "εννοώ" so much, you can always say "εννούσα: ποιο ήταν αυτό το ρήμα;". It kind of sounds like you're trying too hard, but that's a solution if you demand that verb to be present and sound grammatically correct. :-p

And yeah, "εννοώ" (the verb) has the word "έννοια" as noun, while "σημαίνω" (the verb) has "σημασία" as noun.

"Έννοια" is an important word in Ancient Greek, and you can see it used in works of philosophers like Plato and Aristotle - it is the organ of the "νόηση" (that is, the intellect, the mind), with which we represent reality in our "νους" (mind). Notice that all words (έννοια, νόηση, νους) have the same root, and they all have a tight relation with "mind", "intellect", "senses", "wisdom".

"Σημασία" had, in Ancient Greek, primarily the meaning of "indication", sorta (something like "ένδειξη" in Greek). If you look up "σημασία" in any Greek-Greek dictionary, the first definition you'll find is that of "the meaning that a word or action has". The shift in meaning came with the usage of the word "σημασία" by the Stoic philosophers, who spoke of "λεξική, γραμματική, προτασιακή και κειμενική σημασία" (word, grammatical, sentence and textual meaning). You can see how true that is when you take the word "semantics" in English (or in any Romance language, like Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French - remember they all come from Vulgar Latin, and Latin was the language the Stoic philosophers spoke in Rome). The word ("semantics"), which obviously comes from "σημασία" (σημαντικός, σημαντική, συμαντικά), is used to denote the meaning of a word, sentence or text. In other words, it's directly related to language. Though in Modern Greek, it's not exclusively tied to that field.

There is also a third word, "νόημα". And the three of these words are different. I took a look at the Μπαμπινιώτης dictionary and saw what it had to say about these words. I'm pasting it all here (with a quick, simple translation into English in case it's too complicated to understand all this stuff in Greek).

Quick translation:
"Έννοια" is whatever is seized by any person through his perception, relative to objects of our reality. Every entity exists in the mind, in the intellect of each human being in the form of a corresponding meaning, which may differ according to the knowledge, experiences, maturity, the way and the place in/of life etc. of every person. Each meaning is encoded in different languages by means of convention, so that it means the same to all people.

It is enconded linguistically as "σημασία", binding all speakers of any given language. Linguistically, έννοια is regarded as having a subjective essence, whereas the σημασία is, likewise, of an intelectual essence (existing as an "information" in one's mind), though also holding linguistic spirits. That is, it holds social and communicative values and functions.

"Νόημα" is the meaning of a full sentence, not of an isolated word or phrase. Thus, it differs from "έννοια" (since it is a meaning or "σημασία"), as well as from simple word meaning (since it regards sentence meanings). According to these distinctions, one should generally avoid speaking of the έννοια or the νόημα of a word! We speak of the σημασία of a word and of the νόημα of a sentence, whereas we can speak generally of the έννοια of friendship or the έννοια of the good outside the sphere of simple or multiple semantic assignments (denotation) of each έννοια with σημασίες / words in any given language.

Σ'ευχαριστώ πάλι :) Καλό ότι δεν προσπάθησα να διαβάσω αυτό στα ελληνικά, ακόμα στα αγγλικά ήταν δύσκολο να καταλάβω

The word "meaning" in English doesn't have a single, simple, well - meaning :) It seems to me that Έννοια is closer to "intention" in some cases, while σημασία is the simple "dictionary meaning" attached to a word. Yes... having read again your translation I think I pretty much got it. Now it remains for me to remember it for next time :angelic:

No problem. :)

Based on what it read on the dictionary, I'd say "έννοια" is "meaning" in a deeper sense - as in "the meaning of friendship" or "the meaning of good". If you would say "σημασία της φιλίας", I think it would be more like "the importance of friendship". "Τι έννοια έχει η φιλία;" would be "what meaning does friendship hold?", whereas "Τι σημασία έχει η φιλία;" would be "what is the importance of friendship?". That is, "σημασία" is not as deep, spiritually or intelectually speaking, as "έννοια". At least that's how I see it. If I'm wrong, the Greeks are here to correct me. :-p

And "νόημα" is used for full sentences. :-)

OK, this is the English version:

The other day

"The other day I dreamed like never before, I dreamed that I was in a park where the birds sang gladly and the sun was shining; when I was walking through the grass looking at the sky, a young woman suddenly appeared in front of me and said me "come with me, you won't regret", at this moment I didn't know if I would accompany her... (a myriad of images followed each other quickly and I looked a dark gap far away)
When I opened my eyes, I was on the verge of an abyss in which bottom, two perpendicular rings of energy were revolving without being touched."
(to be cotinued...)
