Translation of YouTube song (Uzbek, but Chinese subs!)

Postby samarqand » 2013-11-05, 12:00

Hi all!

Sort of a weird request here! There's a song that I love by an Uzbek music group called Shahrizoda. The song is sung in Uzbek, but the YouTube video has Chinese subtitles! (I'm led to believe that the girls in the group were intermittently based in Urumqi, Xinjiang province, and trying to break the Han Chinese market at the time).

There are no lyrics available (in Uzbek), because if there were I might be able to loosely translate by use of Uzbek-English online dictionaries. Very rough, I know, but better than nothing!

The Turkic language forum doesn't seem to have many Uzbek threads, and in fact someone has posted two translation requests with no reply so I thought it would be best if I tried here first, since there appear to be more Chinese speakers :)

I am more than happy to supply the YouTube link, but it's mostly the chorus that I am interested in getting translated into English, so I've just screencapped those particular four lines in Chinese subtitles, and would really appreciate if someone could translate them into English for me :3

Image

If anyone can help me, I will be so grateful! Thank you so much in advance!! :)

(Sorry for the long story as well, but I thought I should explain the context!).

Edit: Just in case there is anybody out there interested in listening to the song, the link is here.

生活你不要让我远离爱
让爱永留心间
生活你不要这样折磨人
不要让有情人遭遇苦难

Life, don't let me be far away from love
Let love stay forever in my heart
Life, don't torment me like this
Don't let those who are in love suffer

Thank you so much Pangu!! I really appreciate it :)

Now I'm attempting to translate BACK to Uzbek (so I can have proper 'lyrics'). Very difficult task without knowing any Uzbek native speakers!

Thanks again :)

Pangu's translation is not literal, but sounds better this way in English. :)

How would you translate it literally? I did translate with how it would sound better in English in mind, but I thought I was being faithful to the original meaning.

I don't understand Chinese, but with languages that are SOV instead of English SVO, a literal translation doesn't sound quite right.

I'm happy with how you have translated :)

My problem here is, I really want to know the lyrics in Uzbek (so I can sing along), but there are not many Uzbek speakers here I don't think...!!!

No worries. I sometimes translate between English and Chinese as a volunteer gig so I am glad for any potential opportunity to improve, which is why I asked hāozigǎnr.

Do you know the title of the song? If so can you Google for the lyrics? Perhaps you have already tried.

Yes, definitely already googled. I'm requesting a transcription from lyricstranslate.com. We'll see if anybody responds! It would be so much easier if the language wasn't Uzbek (if it was Russian, for example), because whilst it's a commonly used language in Central Asia, not so common or known in the rest of the world! I suppose that's what makes it more interesting, though. I do love the way it sounds!

How would you translate it literally? I did translate with how it would sound better in English in mind, but I thought I was being faithful to the original meaning.

I often have the defect of translating things in a too literal way, with the result of sounding stilted in the target language.

For instance, I would have said:

Life, don't let distance myself from love
Let love stay forever in the heart
Life, don't torture people like this
Don't let those who have sentiments encounter disasters.

But probably your translation sound better in English.
Many sentences are written in impersonal style, such as 在心间 (in the heart), 折磨人 (torture people); but in the context it's clear it's referring to "me".
Moreover I've found the video with Chinese subtitles, and in another part of the song, the subtitles say 折磨我 (torture me).

By the way, nice song! I'm glad you have let me know this group. But it seems that lyrics in the original language aren't available on the web.

The only song from this group of which I managed to find the lyrics in the original language is 快乐的玩吧 (Oynasun). You can listen to it and read the Uzbek lyrics here:

Oynasun
kelinglar dostlar oynayli heqkim qettda khalmasun
kelinglar dostlar oynayli heqkim qettda khalmasun
kining mayli kimda bolsa khoyup bering oynasun
kining mayli kimda bolsa khoyup bering oynasun
Oyaniga taxlap oynasun buyaniga taxlap oynasun
Oyaniga taxlap oynasun buyaniga taxlap oynasun
Qaqigha askhan lentisini yaniga taxlap oynasun
Qaqigha askhan lentisini yaniga taxlap oynasun

It's sort of funny because in the second line of the chorus the girls say hamma hamma in Uzbek, which translates as "all of this" or perhaps even 'everything', but the Chinese subtitles don't even seem to mention those words, unless it's being translated differently. Although I DID notice that the subtitles for the FIRST chorus, look slightly different to the second & third?! Particularly that second line! Hmm...

Glad you like the song, hāozigǎnr! It's very catchy.

I've found a few more lyrics by Shahrizoda at LyricsTranslate. I already knew about 'Oynasun', that was the first song I heard by them and I love it! I know all the words off by heart haha...

There is someone on YouTube who pretty much uploaded all the songs from their first and second albums - they made videos for each one. The second album has a lot of subtitles in Chinese because I've come to believe they were trying to break into the Han Chinese market (as they were intermittently based in Urumqi, Xinjiang). One of the songs they sing in Chinese, another in Uyghur, but most of them are in Uzbek. They have some truly lovely songs, just wish there were more lyrics floating around...

Great that you found other lyrics!

In the subtitles video, the second line of subtitles say:

决不让过去的错误再现
jué bú ràng guò qù de cuò wù zài xiàn

Absolutely will not repeat past mistakes.

Maybe it's implied "all the past mistakes" that the translator didn't include in the Chinese translation?

Haha! That's funny. But no I actually meant the second line of the first chorus, which looks like this:

Image

Compared to the second line of the chorus when it is sung for the 2nd and 3rd time (which Pangu translated):
Image

It's strange to me why those lines should be different because I'm pretty sure they're saying the EXACT same thing in Uzbek... Are you able to tell me what the first translation is? Thank you! :)

It has a similar meaning to the last line of your first message:

Don't let those who have sentiments (/who are in love) be upset/annoyed.

Thanks hāozigǎnr :) I still find it strange that they are saying the same thing in Uzbek and yet have slightly different subtitles for that part of the chorus. Oh well, perhaps it was a mistake :P Doesn't matter though.

I am no closer to knowing ALL the Uzbek words but I appreciate your help!
I did, through your translations, discover that they definitely say 'suffer' - the word for suffer in Uzbek is jafo. :)

Maybe it's time to look for some Uzbek resources?

I have a few now, thank you! :) I also have an Uzbek friend but he's away at the moment, otherwise I'd ask him. Although his mother tongue is Russian, not Uzbek.
