Where did you find that gloss? I've only seen 悲 used as a descriptive verb meaning "to be sorrowful" or "to pity". The corresponding noun would be 悲感 or 悲苦.

I used this website to find up the term "sadness".

Looking at usage examples, I'm only seeing 悲 used with the meaning "sorrow" in Literary Chinese contexts (e.g. four-character phrases like 极悲不哭 and 悲從中來). In colloquial examples, it's always compounded, e.g. 留下只有悲感。"Only sadness remains".

(I'm also confused why you're using a website that teaches Standard Chinese to look up words in Cantonese. The best source for Cantonese vocabulary online is http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/.)

For me, 悲哀 is most common heard for sadness in daily Chinese in Taiwan. 傷心 and 難過 are almost synonyms.

悲 and 悲苦 are more literal. I seldom read or hear 悲感 in Taiwan。

(This game has a potential disadvantage. For example, I can not say 壞心 is definitely unnatural, but I myself cannot figure out a natural sentence with it on my first thought.)

Literary.

Yeah, for some reason 好心 is natural, but not 坏心...
