I noticed that this year's Reporters Without Borders report is out.
http://rsf.org/index2014/en-index2014.php

Top 5:
1. Finland
2. Netherlands
3. Norway
4. Luxembourg
5. Andorra

Bottom 5:
180. Eritrea
179. North Korea
178. Turkeministan
177. Syria
176. Somalia

Some major economies:
14. Germany
18. Canada
28. Australia
33. United Kingdom
39. France
42. South Africa
46. United States of America
50. Taiwan
59. Japan
111. Brazil
154. Turkey
175. People's Republic of China

My country fall a place, from #24, to #25. But on the bright side, Northern Cyprus improved from #94 to #83.
Greece continues to go downhill, from #84 to #99. Last year there were many persecutions of journalists (eg Vaxevanis), threads from government officials to sue foreign newspapers, and media organisations were closed down, often by the government (see ERT). I'm really worried about the situation in Greece. If you look at a map of media ownership in Greece, you too will be terrified.

Only a couple of days after the index was released, Greece:
a) Presses charges against a journalist for quoting ... the Law in her reportage. Suddenly, the text of the Law (the one the parliament votes and the Government Gazette publishes) is classified as "military secret"
b) The Public Order Ministry issues an injunction against a television station, to pre-emptively ban the broadcast of an investigation of the recent immigrant boat capsising which appeared suspicious from the first day

I also just noticed that a Greek politician is currently suing the Greek Wikipedia, a certain wikipedia editor, and the Greek Open Source Software Association (!), because the article about him mentions and cites with reliable sources, something he doesn't like.

Also, and I mentioned this elsewhere, but last month a blogger has convicted for blasphemy, after showcasing how fake "holy miracles" are an organised scam ran by monasteries to get money from devotees. You'd think that a Church would want to cleanse themselves by those who scam in the name of their religion, but instead, they have the state help them continue doing so.

Greece's place in that index is sad, but well deserved.
