I was in Northern Ireland and a man asked me what religion I was.

I said, "I am atheist."

"But are you Protestant or Catholic?"

"Neither. I'm an atheist. It means I don't believe in God."

"Yes, but which God don't you believe in, the Protestant God or the Catholic God?"

That joke is probably as old as I am.

Though it's true that I do tell people it's the Catholic god I don't believe in, since I was raised Roman Catholic and that continues to shape your thinking whether you want it to or not.

I had to say Buddhist, because even though I'm kind of atheist I like the ideas of Buddhism, like meditation.

I didn't really learned enough about religion to know what religion I have.
I know that I'm not a Christian at least.

How could you be an agnostic atheist?
Could you explain this?

Before, I used to explain it by saying that I didn't know (agnostic) and I didn't believe (atheist).

But I think it's more complicated than that. Some days I have a pretty strong feeling that God doesn't exist. You could call that strong atheism. Some days, I just don't know.

I was shocked a few days ago, when my mother was blessed by the pope.
"But you're a Lutheran, a heretic!"
"Protestants and Catholics have joined forces nowadays, and are bosom friends fighting against the common foe, the unbelievers."
"Darn."

For my part, I am a synchretist and might be placed in the Pagan category, or am I rather a Christian hermit? :P

Buddhism appeals to me, too, but I don't consider it a "religion". At the very least, it's not a theistic one, so there's no contradiction between ticking both that and the "Atheist" box.

Of course. Religion has a cultural significance as well. Even if you don't actually believe in it, it still is a part of your cultural heritage.

Raised to be Catholic (like most of the people here), but I've been (passive) atheist for years now.

I was never really a Christian, but I've "officially" been an atheist for a few years now.

Is that really true? I'd be interested to see a poll about what religion people were raised in.

I mean, Catholic by label for them, but those who practice it is in the minority. There is a poll if you want to see (if I can find it).

What I meant by "raised to be Catholic" is that my parents did send me to Sunday schools and made me do the whole communion and confirmation crap.

I know what you mean, I fall into the same category. I'm just surprised to hear that a poll was conducted and showed that a majority of those posting here were raised Catholic. If you can find me a link, I'd love to see it.

I was raised both Catholic and Protestant, I went to a Catholic school in kindergarten (mostly because the other schools were ghetto) and we went to a protestant church for a bit when I was in 1st and 2nd grade.
