Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary

Postby IkimashoZ » 2005-09-14, 8:28

I'm intending this thread to be a running string of questions and comments about the real life materials I post from Japan. Any and all posts pertaining to more complex grammar and vocab issues are welcome, even if they do not apply directly to the material for the week.

You may use any English-Japanese bi-directional dictionary you want for this course, but I highly recommend the one at www.popjisyo.com. I'll provide the readings, but it will be up to you to look up the words.

Lesson #1: September 14, 2005

Vocab:
第(だい)
回(かい)
全国(ぜんこく)
豊かな(ゆたかな)
海(うみ)
大会(たいかい)
恵み(めぐみ)
光る(ひかる)
未来(みらい)
映す(うつす)
鏡(かがみ)
期日(きじつ)
平成(へいせい)
会場(かいじょう)
横浜(よこはま)
及び(および)
臨港(りんこう)

Look at all the text above the pink and green boxes. Imagine that this company wants to target an English-speaking audience. Provide a translation for all the text above the pink and green boxes. You should discover what the event described is, where it is and when it is.

You get a bonus point if you can find the name of the company offering the package (it's somewhere below the pink and green boxes) and if you can provide the reading for the characters.

If it helps, do a literal translation first, then try to make your literal translation into readable English.

Throw some questions at me!

IE 6. And no, I don't have a choice.

I'm using IE6 too. Very odd, indeed. I have no idea why my server should decide not to exist for you. It's not like I'm running a porn site or something.

It works with Firefox and IE6 for me, too. It might depend on your provider, there are some sites which I can't access with one provider (or can't access much, GMX, BTW) while they work fine with another one (T-Online, Congster).
Please correct my mistakes!

The image is a bit blurred, so it's quite difficult to read some of the smaller text. Anyway, with your readings given I think to have found the following:

It's the 25th nationwide "abundant sea" convention, a festival where the sea is blessed, probably for all it gives to the Japanese.

The sea is described as shining or glittering, acting as a large mirror reflecting the future.

The event is held at Yokohama harbour, in a park facing the sea, on 19.-20. November 2005.

You get a bonus point if you can find the name of the company offering the package (it's somewhere below the pink and green boxes) and if you can provide the reading for the characters.

It's the Tōkyū Kankō, apparently some kind of travel agent.

Your verdict?

よろしい!

Good job. I will do some more scavenging for materials. I also thought the part about the "abundant sea" was difficult to translate. It's just a title, so you get a lot of leverage when translating, since the name of the event is rather arbitrary.

One other thing I think is interesting is that 平成17年 and 2005年 seem pretty interchangable here. Moreso than I anticipated from class, where everything in books and in class was 2005年.

New lesson to come soon.

The Western calendar is usually used in all kinds of scientific documents, but as soon as things go cultural, both versions are used. As the more "traditional" the texts get, the more you'll read heisei dates.

Let's find a translation for the first page and excerpt of this 広告(こうこく). I was in my local コンビニ and picked this up. 宮崎さん has come up in conversation here recently with his famous movie ほたるのはか.

Here are some goals for these pieces:

1) Find the name of the movie in Japanese. Is the English translation literal or more or a figurative representation of the Japanese?

2) What kind of deal can I get if I want to buy the movie at Lawson? Who's offering the deal? What exactly are those extra goodies at the bottom? How do I get them?

3) When will the package be released?

4) Why does that poster on the second image have English all over it? Isn't this deal supposed to appeal to Japanese customers?

5) When was the movie released in America? What was the format (TV? Theatre? DVD?)?

6) Maybe I want this buy this package. I'm not sure though. Maybe I should wait a few weeks before making a reservation. Or maybe I could take the train to Osaka and try to find the same poster for a better price. Is this a good idea? Why or why not?

7) Write up a rough translation of the text on the cover page and the excerpt from the inside.
