Osias' Japanese questions

Postby Osias » 2019-09-22, 2:19

I'm watching Evangelion. Why are the names of Shinji and Misato written in katakana? Being native Japanese names, shouldn't them have kanjis?
2017 est l'année du (fr) et de l'(de) pour moi. Parle avec moi en eux, s'il te plait.

All native Japanese names can be written in kanji, but they don’t have to be and not all are. My friend’s Japanese-born wife, for instance, has a Native Japanese name (Risa) whose official form is written in hiragana.

I imagined that but I was expecting hiragana too.

Katakana is often used in place of Kanji for personal names (as opposed to hiragana). The choice to use katakana for native Japanese words is often stylistic.
