Japanese Study Group

みんな、こんにちは!

This thread is the same as a lot of the other study group threads. Basically it's a group attempt at learning so Japanese. Ordinarily we would pick a resource to go through, but after discussing with the two other people who are interested, we've decided to run this a bit differently. We'll go through our own resources, set our own goals, and report at the end of a week what we've done, and help and motivate each other.

Though, if people with the same resource do want to go through it together, that's absolutely fine. (I have Minna no Nihongo [which I'm currently using] and Genki, for reference.)

Anyone is free to join at anytime!

Group 1:

Materials:
  • Minna no Nihongo textbook series (Beginner 1) by 3A [including workbook]
  • Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course by Conning [optional]

Assignments:
  • TBA

Sure, unless you'd like to wait.

My goals for this week: Review Lesson 2 (and maybe 3) in MnN.

Oh, well, if we're all using different resources for Japanese...then I have something called Yookoso! I used the first book in college but also have the second book in the same series. I wonder whether I should try using the second book even though I'm not confident about having remembered everything from the first book. Maybe I could try doing that and going back to the first one later if I forgot something. :hmm:

Yeah, I guess I'll do that. (I've started already just because otherwise, I'd have no idea how that might go).

Well, as I said, we can use the same resource (I mean who ever wants to), but due to ceid donn's goals I thought it best for her to be able to do her own thing. Especially since I'm going to try to start doing some intensive study of Japanese.

Also, look who's more advanced than the rest indeed, Mister "I'm going to the second volume"! :P

Lol, well, that may just be because I happened to take a year of Japanese in college. I'm not sure who else on this forum has done that before other than Yasna and me (Yasna of course knows Japanese way better than any of us).

I am halfway through Japonais 1. I am on lesson 13 out of 21. So far the course has covered all hiragana and some katakana. It has introduced some kanji in some of the basic phrases but I haven't been making a list of them. I might do that when I've completed the course.

I completed Unit 1 in CJ. Just basic introductions. The phrases are most polite forms whereas the Memrise course has more informal phrases. The unit only introduces 7 kanji, all of which I already know:

田 da, -ta (5) -- rice field
本 hón, -moto (5) -- book
山 yama (3) -- mountain
中 naka (4) -- middle, inside, during
下 shita, shimo (3) -- bottom, below
川 kawa, -gawa (3) -- river
上 ue (3) -- top, above

Week 2 goals:

1) Finish Japonais 1
2) Complete Unit 2 in CJ
3) I want to see if I can casually do the Duolingo course along side the Memrise course. It basically covers the same things, but in a different setting so I think it would be good for reiteration and memorization.

またね :D

私は:

I reviewed lesson 2 and kinda reviewed lesson 3 in MnN.
Basically it was mostly reviewing ko-so-a-do words.

This week's goals: Review Lessons 3-? (I have to see how many lessons I can get through reasonably this week. I'll update later.)

I think I watched the videos for the first four dialogues. They're pretty good!

I did start reading Yookoso! back when I said I would, but I've kind of abandoned it at this point now that I also have access to Minna no Nihongo. :P They introduce a lot of those formal expressions early on, which makes sense, I think, but gosh, those are things I don't know yet.

EDIT: I think I also tried to review the first two chapters as well as the kanji you were working on, księżycowy.

Looking at the very first kanji listed in the resource you have for kanji, I already knew the on'yomi ニチ and ジツ for 日 but would automatically read 日 as ニチ since it's more common, I guess. I'm also familiar with ひ, び, and か as pronunciations of 日, and I think I've seen ある日 before. However, I didn't know 日々, let alone the fact that that has two pronunciations (ひび 'daily, days' or ひにち/ひ日 'date, number of days'), nor did I know 日ソ.

I'm wondering if we might be able to get a group project going. I was thinking it could be translating something(s) as a group. What do you guys think?

Maybe it could be stories from any of these:
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/
http://hukumusume.com/douwa/betu/
http://www.asagaku.com/shimen.html
http://life.ou.edu/stories/

Or the manga Yotsubo&:
https://bilingualmanga.com/manga/yotsub ... pter-1/1-1

Or (this might be a bit advanced) videos from the Easy Japanese series:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... MzWBjhg_Ap

Any other suggestions are welcome! :)

Yes, but I recommend making a separate thread for that. :)

Why do we need a separate thread? :hmm:

I wouldn't have time for anything else right now. I'll just bow out the study group if this what you guys would rather do.

No need to do that. You can keep doing what you've been doing. I was just curious if you'd be interested in doing it. :)

So we can keep this thread for keeping up with our studying progress and use the other thread for transcribing and/or translating stuff. EDIT: This is what we do for Turkish, too. Take a look at the "King-Size Translations" thread. :)

Well, considering ceid donn doesn't have the time atm to do a translation project, that would probably be best anyway.

We can do our translations elsewhere, and we can keep doing our study group here. If/when ceid donn has time and if/when she wants to join the translation effort, she can. Otherwise she can just keep to business as usual here. :)

What would be the point of translating those? They're already translated!

Maybe we could try subtitling an episode of Iron Chef (料理の鉄人) in Japanese instead. :P Or maybe we could try translating this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MJA0qacmMM
Both would probably be pretty advanced.

And I'm not that advanced, so....probably not.

I think I'll either go back to my shrimp story, or go through Yotsuba&.

How are your Japanese studies going, ceid donn? :)

EDIT: That reminds me, Vijay, how helpful do you find the video dialogues to MnN?
