よくある間違い (Common mistakes)

Postby hashi » 2011-08-14, 12:27

I'm stealing this idea from the German sub-forum. Please comment if you have anything you'd like me to add to the original post. This is based on what I've found correcting Japanese here and there.

List of common mistakes in Japanese
尋常な日本語の間違いのリスト

1. ある/いる - to be
Aru is to only to be used by inanimate things, while iru is only for living things.
「ある」というのは不生物だけへの利用されるし、「いる」は生きている事だけへの利用されます。

  • 意見がある [iken ga aru]
  • ぺんがある [pen ga aru]
  • 犬がいる [inu ga iru]
  • 先生がいる [sensei ga iru]

2. Adverbs/particles requiring the negative
Some adverbs/particles require the negative form of the verb: amari, zenzen, shika
特定な形容詞と助詞を使うと、打消しの動詞が要られます:あまり、全然、しか

  • あまり好きじゃない
  • 君が何と言ったか全然わからない
  • 千円しかないんで、行けないって

In some dialects, the usage of aru and iru are flipped. Also, in some dialects, only aru is used. Or, in some cases, oru. Not all living things take iru though. Limit it to things living that at one point have been animate.
As for adverbs and particles with the negative, it is only adverbial particles that are like this. Both are categorized as syntactical agreement parts of speech.

Ah you take the fun out of it: we all know that there is no such thing as 標準語. JK
Howbeit, it is true that aru should be used in reference to inanimate objects whereas iru is for living animate objects. Now, things like 磯巾着, where only because it's under the animal kingdom, gets iru.

インギンチャクについて喋る必要が有る場合を想像出来ないよ。さらにやっぱり「最初のポストに付けられたい他の尋常な間違いがあったら、リプライして下さい」と言ったから、方言の情報あんまり要らない。何しろ、リプライをありがとう。

Ah, I have thought of a common mistake.

Despite being used colloquially, it is correct to use the particle が with the auxiliary verb たい and with the 可能型.

例:

日本語が出来る。
動画が見たい。

I guess if this is for common mistakes, which I assume infers mistakes that are common but accepted--slang--I'll point some more things out.

やっぱり → やはり
あんまり → あまり
いんぎんちゃく → いそぎんちゃく

That's not really a mistake. It would only be a mistake if using を~たい was wrong, which it is not.
が~たい is just an alternative.

やっぱり → やはり
あんまり → あまり
いんぎんちゃく → いそぎんちゃく

The former two really didn't need pointing out to me thanks. The latter was just my confusion of ン with ソ. And no, this is for mistakes which are made commonly by learners, but are not accepted because they are wrong.

Hello. Hajimemashite. I'm HIrashin from Japan. I'm new here.

May I correct your Japanese?

We don't say 尋常な間違い. Common mistakes should be yokuaru machigai (よくある間違い).

Until later、

Hirashin

Let me correct your Japanese, Hashi san.

hashi wrote:「ある」というのは不生物だけへの利用されるし、「いる」は生きている事だけへの利用されます。

We don't say 不生物. We say 無生物 instead.

We don't say だけへの利用される. It should be:
だけに用いられる or だけに使われる

That usage of し is incorrect.

「ある」(というの)は、無生物だけに用いられ、「いる」は、生きている物だけに用いられます。

特定な形容詞と助詞を使うと、打消しの動詞が要られます:あまり、全然、しか

特定の形容詞や助詞を用いると、打ち消しの形を用いる[or 使う]必要があります。
or
特定の形容詞や助詞を用いると、打ち消しの形を用い[or 使わ]なくてはなりません。

Hope it helps.

Can this thread title be changed to something grammatical? It's pretty bad for learners if one of the first thread titles they come across in this forum contains incorrect Japanese.

Would someone please change the thread title to よくある間違い? It's embarrassing that a thread with a title in wrong Japanese has been stuck at the top of the forum for years.
