These songs seem to have clear lyrics eventhough they're pretty old. Not sure if that helps you in your study, but the songs are nice.

These songs are ok. Not really my type but I will study them because I think they will make good karaoke songs when I go sing karaoke with my Japanese friends.

I bought a couple of cds in Japan last month :

- Nakajima Miyuki (two albums)

- ONE OK ROCK (Kanjou effect and their first album)

- Tamura-pan (2 singuru)

I recommend you listen to Tamura-pan, she has an interesting voice and her lyrics are not as cheesy as many other young Japanese pop singers or bands.
The song "Buttobasuzo" in particular is great (sorry cant type Japanese characters on this computer now).

My most favourite Hirai Ken song is probably Hitomi wo Tojite. What was the title of his song that was revived by the Taiwanese group F4?

What do you guys think about Fukuyama Masaharu's music? :D He was one of the artists that was recommended to me by an American learner when I was starting out with Nihongo. Aside from Fukuyama, he also recommended GACKT, SMAP (I know, haha), Utada Hikaru GLAY and Luna Sea. I listened to them all and loved them.

In class, our teachers used music by Utada, Hirai and Kiroro.

AKB48 FTW. As far as easy-to-listen middle-of-the-road pop goes, you can't go wrong though it's not going to impress you particularly either.

Whether you like the "mainstream JPOP" or not, it's worth checking it out at least a few songs since AKB48 really is a household name and a big part of contemporary Japanese mass culture. For me, AKB48 is perfect when I feel like listening to something but feel too tired to pay any attention or invest myself emotionally etc. In that sense, it has a purpose. (And by the way, you don't have to like the music to be a fan.)

Similarly, I'd suggest you check out Morning Musume and Hirosue Ryoko. You don't have to like Britney Spears, but any person conversant with American culture would recognize her.

Another option is BabyMetal. It's heavy metal meeting Jpop. The main vocal is actually pretty good, and if you're into metal, you'll either love it or hate it. (They're usually welcomed in most Japanese rock/metal communities and festivals, though. And no, Japan takes rock seriously.) All in all, worth checking out as a good example of Japanese adaptation of a foreign culture.

You can easily find their videos on Youtube.

Addition: a few anime soundtracks, just to make a point that not all anime music is necessarily cheesy cutesy crap that even I (after all these years) still can't stand. I don't mean even to try to be exhaustive; the selection is personal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eb4ONZw01Y
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica ED "Magia"
The animation on the ED is rather lackluster, but I just have to add at least one piece from Yuki Kajiura.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM8ODecbuhA
Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei: 1st OP "Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru"
Seeing this opening scene surprised the crap out of everyone when it first aired. No, this is not a r-rated BDSM show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX-yENHkeMo
K-on! ED "Don't say 'Lazy'"
The voice actresses from the show actually formed a band, producing music as the fictional band within the show. Wrap your head around that..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whK7sZacKzA
K-on! Soundtrack "Sweet Bitter Beauty Song"
Released on the same single with "Don't say 'Lazy'" above. I actually wish this song played a bigger role in the anime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWB01IuMvzA
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu Soundtrack "God Knows" and "Lost My Music"
Actual anime footage, full versions easily found on YouTube. If you like the song, and if you're bored, take a look at the Russian dub of the scene; in many ways it's superior.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkiNUNC4ZYU
Higurashi on naku koro ni OP, "Higurashi no naku koro ni"
I felt like I was going insane as I repeated the track on the ipod for hours on end when the anime was airing. I shouldn't have done it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soGzGCxW27c
Noir Soundtrack "Salva Nos"
Other than a couple of Latin mistakes such as using "Dominus" instead of proper vocative "Domine", this one used to be my top for a long time. Actually, I think it still is.

Hey Karavinka, thanks for the AKB48 video. I am listening to them on youtube now.
