My Short Japanese Speech?

Postby Condraz23 » 2009-05-09, 6:45

I have to prepare a small speech on Japanese. I've written it all down and its all been double checked but since Japanese isn't my best subject, I think I might still have a few grammatical errors. Hopefully, it's all okay. Can somebody please check it to see if there aren't any errors?

Japanese: Konichiwa. Watashi no namae wa Condraz23 desu soshite jyuu roku sai desu. Nihongo ga jyozu ni naritakatta desu kara ichinen kanme Nihon ni sumimashita. Sukoshi kawatta koto wo shitakatta desu kara Ryukyu shyoto made ryokou shimashita. Ryukyu shyoto ni tsuite nagara, takusan nojou to ojiisan to obaasan wo miemashita keredomo nanari omoshiroku shiete iru koto ga arimasen. Roku satsu kanme kara, tsumaranakatta narimasu. Mata, Ryukyu hogen wa gakkou ni naratta Nihongo to onaji de wa arimasen kara taihen nigiyaka tokoro made ikitakatta desu. Nochihodo, watashitachi ga Sapporo ni kimashita. Sapporo wa Ryukyu shyoto yori totemo ookiikute takusan hitotachi ga iru tokoro desu ne.

Watashi no homesutei kazoku wa Ainu deshita. Otoko ga ookikute nagai hige ga motta shoshite onna no kao de "tattoo" ga atta. Sono hitotachi ga Ainu no dentouteki tabemono wo kudasaimashita. Tabete nagara, tabemono wo moratta hito ga mainichi kami ni inottemashita. Sore wa hen to omoimashita keredomo tabemono ga oishiikatta desu kara watashi ga ureshikatta desu. Hokkaido no yuumei na miso ramen mo tabemashita. Watashi no apaato de Sapporo Terebi to wo miemashita. Nihon wa Nyuu Jiraando yori totemo ookikute nigiyaka desu. Nihon ni ichinenkanme sunde kara, watashi no nihongo ga taihen ii naratta to omoimasu. Moshimo anata mo watashi yoo na Nihongo ga jyozu ni naritakatta naraba, Nihon ni hayaku ikanakereba narimasen.

English translation: My name is Condraz23 and I am sixteen years old. I wanted to become good at Japanese so I lived in Japan for about one year. I wanted to do something a bit different so I traveled to the Ryukyu Islands. After I arrived at the Ryukyu Islands, I was able to see many farms and old people but there were no interesting things that I could do. After six months, I became bored. Also, the Ryukyu dialect was not the same as the Japanese I learned at school so I wanted to go to a very lively place. Later on, we arrived at Sapporo. Compared to the Ryukyu Islands, Sapporo is very large and it is a place with many people, isn't it?

My homstay family were Ainus. The men had big, long beards and the women's faces had tattoos. Those people gave me traditional Ainu food. After eating, the person who gave me food prayed to the gods everyday. I thought that was odd but the food was delicious so I was happy. I ate Hokkaido's famous miso ramen too. From my apartment, I could see the Sapporo TV Tower. Compared to New Zealand, Japan is very big and lively. After living in Japan for one year, I think my Japanese has become very good. If you want to become good at Japanese like me, you must quickly go to Japan.

Also, what's the difference between agemasu, kudasaimasu, and moraimasu? Thanks.

Yay. It's good to see another New Zealander on here :D

You're Japanese is pretty good, the major issue was consistancy with plain form or -masu.

- nagara = while
- -me gives it ordinality. Rokkagetsukanme = The 6th month, in some places it's ok, but not others.

Any other questions, just ask. I'm not perfect at Japanese, this is just my opinion

Haha no problem. In your speech it says you're 16, but your profile says 24... Are you doing this speech for NCEA?

Ageru = I give (to someone)
Kureru = (someone) gives me
Morau = I, you, etc. receive

These verbs have more polite versions:

Ageru -> sashiageru (humble: I bow and offer you)
Kureru -> kudasaru (honorific: You are so generous as to give me)
Morau -> itadaku (humble: I might not deserve to receive)

You've been really picky on spelling like correcting jyozu to jouzu. Spelling isn't too important for a speech, so long as he's got the pronounciation correct.

But that's exactly the point: he didn't get his pronunciation right, since jozu and jouzu are pronounced differently by Japanese natives. I know all very well that confusing long and short vowels is a very usual mistake English native speakers make.

Also, jyo may be accepted as a keyboard input for じょ, but does not belong to any romanization standard. It's either jo or zyo.

And yes, I tend to be picky. I'm sorry, I can't change that.

Pickiness is good for a language learner.

It's funny, I always use Hepburn romanization for transliterating things that will be read, but the other system (the one that uses zyo) when inputting Japanese.

That's quite understandable. Hepburn is good for allowing foreigners to best approximate the Japanese pronunciation. Nihon-shiki follows the Japanese phonology, that is, the way natives perceive the sounds, so it's better for those people who internalize the Japanese sounds and the way they relate to each other. For example, an English native thinks that the best way to write ち is chi, but this romanization hides the relation ち has with たてと etc. Someone who "feels" that relation will naturally write ち as ti.

Yeah, it was for an NCEA internal. The results came back last week and I got a Merit (which is roughly equivalent to a B using the American system). I'm very proud of it.
