Installing Japanese Fonts

Windows XP
1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options and then Regional and Language Options (if the Control Panel is in in Classic View, just click Regional and Language Options).

3. Click the Languages tab.

4. Check the Install East Asian Languages box and then click Apply .

5. Click the Details button.

6. Click Add.

7. In the Add Input Language dialog box, select Japanese

8. In the same dialog box, select Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver. 8.1 and click OK.

9. You should now have Japanese under Installed Services.

10. Click OK.

Windows Vista
Japanese fonts are installed by default.

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Click Clock, Language and Region (or Regional and Language Options if your Control Panel is in Classic View and skip to step 4).

3. Click Change keyboards or other input methods

4. Under the Keyboards and Languages tab, click Change keyboards.

5. Click Add.

6. Expand the Japanese entry and check both Japanese and Microsoft IME and then OK.

7. You should now have Japanese under Installed Services.

8. Click OK.

Typing in Japanese

(I will add more on typing in Japanese later. Also, if someone wants to post something on Japanese fonts in Ubuntu, that would be very much appreciated, since there tend to be so many Linux users here.)

Why both? Just "Microsoft IME" is enough.

Linux != Ubuntu.

I pretty much have my typing set up as roumaji. I type "nihongo" and it comes out にほんご then I push "space" creating 日本語.

Yeah, typing with a kana keyboard is silly unless you have the markings on the keys.

Yeah, I had it set up on kana, but it was ridiculously complicated.
I hate roumaji.

Or should I use 嫌う?

If it's xp, have you restarted first?

Do you see the Language bar with JP on it? (if you talking about Windows, of course)

In Vista, you already have it. In XP, you have to install it from the install CD.

Theres bound to be places online that you could either download the necessary files, or even download a new xp cd. I know it's illegal but you'd only be using it for installing the Japanese stuff... right?

Another less than favourable option would be to NJStar (if it's still around). It's what I used when we had windows 2000 and I couldn't get the Japanese installed.

BTW, there is IME for Win2000 on the Miсrosoft site; maybe, there is one for XP, too.

諦めちゃ駄目。Torrentsは汝が友だ。 :) Just download the required distro, and when Windows asks for the Setup files, point to its place.

Or you can download buy ATOK. It's also IME, but the more advanced one.
