A note before I answer:

I generally would use "demo" as "but", and I would translate "ga" between two clauses as "even though".

1) Watashi wa machimashita ga, kare wa kimasen deshita.
Even though I waited, he didn't come.

2) Kinō gakusei wa Furansugo o benkyō shimashita ga, kyō daigaku e ikimasen deshita.

Even though the students studied French yesterday, there wasn't any school today ("they didn't go to school today")

3) Haha Chūgokugo o hanashimashita ga, kakimasen deshita.
Even though my mother (could) speak Chinese, she (could)n't write (it).

4) Ima hon o yomitai desu ga, tomodachi wa yomimasu.
Even though I want to read a book right now, my friend reads it. (is reading would be yondemasu or more correctly yonde imasu)

5) Inu wa neko o mimashita ga, neko wa inu o mimasen deshita.
Even though the dog saw the cat, the cat didn't see the dog.

1) You don't sleep at the cinema but you read a magazine and a book.
Anata wa eigakan de nemasen ga, magajin to hon wo yomimasu.
(as I noted before, I would use "demo")

2) My friend and I watch a film at school.
Boku wa gakkou de tomodachi to eiga wo mimasu.
(eargh... I forget exact sentence order sometimes. i think it's boku-ha gakkou-de tomodachi-to instead of boku-wa tomodachi-to gakkou-de)

3) Mother taught at the university and the school.
Okaasan wa daigaku to gakkou de kangaemashita.

4) I didn't go by bus to work but I went with a friend by car.
Boku wa basu de shigoto ni ikimasen deshita ga (it's a whole lot more convenient to say 'ikanakatta ga', but I assume for right now we should just use formal), tomodachi to kuruma de ikimashita.

5) I didn't write the letter to my boyfriend but I wrote to you and a friend.
Boku wa koibito ni tegami wo kakimasen deshita (kakanakatta... yep...)

:)

Hmm.. so am I wrong then, or just not good enough to make these lessons?

Nonono, not "wrong". It just sounds awkward to translate it that way, even though it's essentially right. A "style issue" maybe...

1) You don't sleep at the cinema but you read a magazine and a book.
- Eigakan de nemasen ga zasshi to hon o yomimasu.

Yes it is normal to omit pronouns, but also elsewhere you use pronouns where I would omit them a lot of the time.

"zasshi" and "magajin" are both acceptable.

2) My friend and I watch a film at school.
- Watashi no tomodachi to watashi wa gakkō eiga o mimasu.

Hmm, I would omit "watashi no" (~tomodachi)... but... that's correct too. It just sounds a little strange.

I said "I watch a film at school with my friend", but it could also be translated as "My friend and I watch a film at school"...

3) Mother taught at the university and the school.
- Haha wa daigaku to gakkō de oshiemasu.

Hmm also correct. But "taught" should be past tense in Japanese as well as English here.

4) I didn't go by bus to work but I went with a friend by car.
- Shigoto e ikimasen deshita ga tomodachi to kuruma de ikimashita.

Yes but "by bus" is left out here, and "[h]e" is "towards" instead of "to", "ni" indicates that you finished going there instead of just travelling in that direction. "toshokan he ikimasu" indicates you're going towards the library but not nessecarily that the library is your destination.

5) I didn't write the letter to my boyfriend but I wrote to you and a friend.
- Watashi no bōifurendo ni tegami o kakimasen deshita ga anata to tomodachi ni kakimashita.

Boyfriend can be "boifurendo" or "koibito", but "koibito" is more gender-neutral.

Almost the same as yours except the fact that you use informal verbs which WILL be taught in later lessons. You also use certain words like "boku" (masculine word for "I") and so on, but at the moment, I am only teaching formal verbs and polite words.

hm ok... I guess instead of "boku" I should use "watashi" then... but also you know, sometimes "boku" can be used in formal situations by guys, just not in really really formal situations or to superiors.

And I don't always use informal verbs, just in a few.

What do you mean by 'abusive behaviour'? I didn't know that stuff about Mark. What happened exactly?

Daniel: Do you know any Japanese dictionary online? It wouldn't be so hard to make the exercices. If you can't find anything, don't worry, I think I got a printed one and I'll try to look for it.

Pa-integral, you may like to have a look at http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html and at http://www.alc.co.jp/. The latter has its menus in Japanese only, but you just have to type the word you're looking for in the first input field on the left of your screen (検索語) and hit ENTER on your keyboard (or click on the button that reads "検索" [kensaku], which means "lookup; retrieve"). If you give it a try using "Catalan", for instance, you'll get the following:

#of Matches: 5

Catalan
 【名】 カタロニア人[語]
 【形】 カタロニア(人[語])の
 ◆【参考】Catalonia
Catalan Grand Company
 【組織名】 カタロニア大傭兵団
Catalan Talgo
 カタラン・タルゴ
Catalani
 【人名】 カタラーニ、カタラニ
Catalano
 【人名】 カタラーノ

It's also very interesting to look names up (though the Japanese renderings will be most often than not based on English / French / German pronunciation). It also has an interesting database of famous people's names rendered into katakana. :) It's fun to have a look around and see people such as NIKOORU KIDDOMAN, DEMI MUUA, TOMU KURUUZU and RIKKII MAATIN listed. :D

If you ever feel like using a Japanese–Japanese dictionary, though, I highly recommend http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/.

Daniel: I think your Japanese lessons and exercises are very good! :)
I have been learning Japanese since around 2 months now and I was finding it quite difficult.
But after having a look at your lessons and exercises, I find it easier, so I'm going to restart my Japanese language learning :)
In fact, I was looking for a Japanese site, which could help me start learning Japanese from scratch. I think it's a wonderful idea to restart from your lessons! :) I'm still on the lookout for a site having Hiragana and Katakana scripts. Do you know of any?
Keep up the good work :)

You can download this program (JapAlpha): http://members.aol.com/JapAlpha/private/japa10.htm
It teaches you all the kana and it has drills so that you memorise them.

Could anyone translate the phrase below?

Kore wa watashi no taisetsu mono.

Thanks.
