unknown romanian character

Postby fabien_v01 » 2013-05-07, 19:35

hello everyone,

I am a beginner in romanian (my native language is French).

A romanian friend of mine gave me her email address and as she wrote she inserted a romanian character I can't identify. It was just before the @ character and it looks like something this:

(here is a better view at http://i81.servimg.com/u/f81/18/28/90/47/unknow11.jpg)

it would be so nice if someone could please help me to identify it?

thanks in advance,

Fabien

I'm a Romanian speaker but I have no idea what that thing is.

The only special letters that Romanian has are: ă, â, î, ț and ș

Maybe it's a big R or the number 18. :D

I think that for Romanian speakers French is the hardest Romance language
because it's the most distant in terms of grammar and vocabulary.

For us Italian is the easiest because we can understand a lot of it without learning.
Then with Spanish and Portuguese it takes time, harder than Italian but learnable.
And finally with French it's like another level.

Italian might be the easiest among Romance languages, but compared with English, for instance, French is easier for Romanian natives. And if you take other languages as reference --- German, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, etc. ---, the easiness of learning French is even more obvious.

Besides French being closely related to Romanian, there are at least two more reasons that make French even easier to learn for us:

- the wide availability of learning and practicing resources in Romania: lots of textbooks, teachers, TV programs, movies, music, etc.;

- and the fact that sometime during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th there was a huge influx of French vocabulary into Romanian, particularly in more technical fields (science, engineering, arts, law, etc.), but also in everyday language, which makes it very easy for us to quickly learn a lot of French words and phrases.

For both reasons, French might even be more accessible to us than Spanish and Portuguese.
