When is the perfect simplu used instead of the perfect compus in Romanian?

I honestly have no idea, but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I studied Romanian to about early intermediate level and never came across the perfect simplu that I am aware of.

Sincer, nu am nici o idee, dar nu cred că este prea important. Am studiat limba română până la nivelul intermediar dar n-am niciodată văzut perfectul simplu.

"When" is the wrong question, you should ask "where?". Then the answer would be Oltenia, the central-southern region of Romania. Otherwise the two are interchangeable regarding their usage.

Typically, their song "My mother made me oltenian" should sounds like this: "Mă făcu mama oltean" instead
of "M-a făcut mama ..." something else.

Ehlana, it's great to see how good your Romanian is. Wow!

Perfectul simplu

Postby Mella » 2008-04-16, 6:18

Hello,
"Perfectul simplu" is a form that is used in only one part of Romania. Actually, 90% of all romanian would tell you that the 'Perfectul simplu" doesn't exist anymore. It does, but don't worry.

I am happy I've found this side. I would like to learn italian, so I need to explore little bit.

Oh, I feel stupid now

I wasn't aware *that* was the Perfectul simplu...I always considered that tense to be an equivalent to the Aorist in Slavic languages, so I thought of it as "the Aorist" ...I didn't know its Romanian name...

Although perfectul simplu is mainly used in Oltenia, the rest of the country generally uses it in fairytales, for actions that are interrupted: "merse el cât merse, până a dat peste un castel" or when they quote what a character says: "Nu vei trece niciodată pe aici, zise balaurul." And notice that here it is only used for the third person.
As for how oltenians use it, there's a rule you should know when speaking with somebody from Oltenia, when you use perfectul simplu, you are only allowed to speak about actions that happened in the last 24 hours. To them, it is incorrect to say "fusei anul trecut". You can only use perfectul simplu even though you're not speaking about something that happened in the last 24 hours only when you tell a fairytale.

In point of fact, the perfect compus is utilized in Romanian in situations that, in English, would more commonly call for the use of the simple past. For example, I went to the movies the other day. “Am văzut un film ieri”. There is such a thing as the perfect form of simplu (for example, eu crezui), but as far as I know, it is only used in certain parts of Romania and in literature.
