hapset/karvat

Postby Glottomany » 2021-04-20, 7:28

Hi there,

Do I understand correctly that hapset is the hair on your head, and karvat is the hair on your body? If not, does Finnish use the same word (as English does) or different words?

Kiitos...

hapsi (plural hapset) is 'hair (on the head)', but it's poetical and not commonly used in everyday language. If you want to say 'hair', it'd be better to use hius (a single hair) / hiukset (plural, all the hair on your head). In spoken language, you can also say tukka (hair, refers to all the hair on head).

Body hair is karva (singular) / karvat (plural). If you want to refer to all the hair on body or on a certain part of body (e.g. "the hair on the back") you can also say karvoitus.

karva and karvoitus are also the words you use for animals. In that case, the latter is similar to 'fur'.

Can I also use hapset for something like the fringes of a mat?

No, those are hapsut. Close but not quite the same! :)
