I learned Maanantai on my guitar and sang it at an accoustic jam one night at the bar. There were only like 10 people, but I half expected someone to come up and tell me I had a huge accent when I sang it or something.

singing in finnish is way easier than speaking. i sound more native-finnish-like while singing.

the 'artistic value' of my singing is another thing though...

I agree! For some reason, Finnish sounds like it should be sung. A fellow Finnish learner (who's probably quite fluent by now) says that my accent is way less noticeable when I'm singing.

Minusta on hienoa, että niin moni suomen opiskelija on kiinnostunut musiikista :). Vai onko se sitä, että suomalainen musiikki saa ihmiset aloittamaan suomen kielen opiskelun useammin kuin muut syyt :hmm:?

I think it's cool that so many Finnish learners have an interest in music :). Or is it that Finnish music makes people want to learn Finnish more than any other reason :hmm:?

I was going to try writing this in Finnish, but gave up. :P

Finnish music is the main reason I chose to learn Finnish. I still don't understand what is so attractive to it. It seems very "Lord of the Rings-y" for example: this video seems to go really well with the Finnish language. (I have no idea what he's saying, it might be explicit.)

with me it was the other way round i guess. i mean my first contact with finnish was by a song and i can say a lot of things about that experience but it wasn't love from the first listen for sure  so in my case - finnish first, and finnish music after that (damn, you have so many great bands there, esp. pop/rock and rock ones /i suck at naming genres/, but not only).

and though finnish is in general a very very very beautiful language (the most beautiful language in the world for me) and though it fits so nicely into songs, i'm totaly in love with SPOKEN finnish  dear finns, talk to me, talk to me, talk to me... :<3:

Se on yhteensattuma, ainakin minulle. Olen soittanut kitaraa sitten viime olin 12 vuotta vanha, ja olen laulunut aina siitä alkaen minä voitiin puhua.

It's a coincidence, at least for me. I have been playing guitar since I was 12 years old, and singing ever since i could talk.

Listening to music just helps with exposure to the language, and I've actually found two I really like. Apulanta (ty, Steisi.) and Chisu.

Footnote type thing: The type of construction I used to word that seems... faulty. I want to say something like olen ollut soittamaan, for some reason instead. Something about how I did that doesn't seem right to me, but I changed it for - um, I don't know, I need help with that there. I've never attempted that type of sentence before.
And so, may Evil beware and may Good dress warmly and eat plenty of fresh vegetables.

No, that would have been way too literal from the English construction. You did better the way you did ;).

Hyvää yötä vanha frendi näe parempia unia
Mä istun himas katsellen vanhoi valokuvia
Muistokansioon sun valokuvat kerään
Sä nukut vieläkin kun mä uuteen aamuun herään
Hyvää yötä veriveli näe kauniimpia unia
Mä istun himas katsellen vanhoi valokuvia
Koko itä puhuu sulle tän biisin kautta
Oisit sanonu ees jotain oltas ehkä voitu auttaa

good night old friend, he sees dreams better
i sit at home looking around at old photographs
to the memory folder your photos are collected
you still sleep when i wake up in the morning
good night bloodbrother, he sees dreams better
i sit at home looking around at old photographs
all east (?) speak to you through this song
you would even say something ??? could maybe help

a friend wanted the translation, but i can't really do it. any help??

Not bad :nope:. Here's my version (based on yours):

Good night, old friend; have better dreams
i sit at home looking around at old photographs
to the memory folder I collect your photos
you will still sleep when i wake up to a new morning
good night bloodbrother, have better dreams
i sit at home looking around at old photographs
The whole east speaks to you through this song
you should have said something, maybe we could have helped

leevi and the leavings - mitä kuuluu marja-leena?

Mitä kuuluu Marja-Leena I'm Sorry
how are you marja-leena, i'm sorry

Että sinulle soitan mä vieläkin
that i'm phoning you once again

Tänä iltana tyhjeni kaljakori
tonight ?? crate of beer

Kun sun vanhaa kuvaa mä katselin
when i looked at your old pictures

Sua koulussa rakastin salaisesti
i loved you secretly in school

Koska olin niin ujo ja hiljainen
because i was so shy and quiet

Ehkä juuri siksi näin kauan kesti
maybe that's why so long ?

Ennen kuin mä kehtasin kertoa sen
??

Mitä kuuluu Marja-Leena
how are you marja leena

Vieläkös sun ihanteena
en tiedä :P

On Beatles ja George harrison
are the beatles and george harrison

Mitä kuuluu Marja-Leena

Minä juomaan ratkenneena

en tiedä vielä

Olen yksinäinen ja onneton
i am alone and unhappy

Kai arvaat miksi sulle nyt soitin
maybe you can guess now why i called you

Ja sua keskellä yötä häiritsin
and disturbed you in the middle of the night

No tietysti sinulle kertoa koitin
well naturally i'll come to tell you (?=

Kuinka sinua rakastan vieläkin
how i love you yet again?

auttakaa :(

Ok, who wanted apulanta?

Kaikki sun pelkosi - All your fear(s)

Säälittävä yritys ymmärtää
ja löytää edes jotain merkitystä
Tapahtumille joista on
jauhettu jo loputtomiin
niin ettei kukaan jaksa niitä enää
edes ne joita kiinnosti

A pathetic attempt to understand
and try to find some meaning
in events that have been done to death*
so much that no-one can be bothered with them anymore
not even those who were interested

Ja se kuristettu mieli on ryvettynyt niissä
And the strangled mind is soiled with them

Kaikki sun pelkosi
talloo sun päällesi
hautaa sun toivon synkkiin uumeniin

Chorus: All your fear(s)
stamp on you
bury your hope in the gloomy depths

Tavallaan olet kuollut jo
joten ei oo syytä protestoida
kun sua kohdellaan kuin vainajaa
miinus kukat ja kunnioitus
tummat puvut ja hyvät ajatukset
mut onhan lisää valitettavaa

In a way you're already dead
so there's no reason to protest
when people treat you like a corpse
minus the flowers and respect
dark suits and good thoughts
but there's more to complain about

Ja se ryvettynyt mieli ei nouse siitä enää
And the soiled mind doesn't rise from it again

Chorus

Nauti siitä nyt se on ihan sun
omin pikkukätösin itse tekemää

Enjoy it, it's all yours
made with your own little hands

Chorus
Chorus

*talked about incessantly, if my above 'done to death' is too regiolecty?

Vauriot - Damage*

Kaikki ovet ovat kiinni
Mutta tunnen hengityksesi
Enää heität heikon varjon
Josta ennen sain voimani

All the doors are shut
But I feel your breath
Now you only cast a weak shadow
from which I used to get my energy

Ei saa näitä päiviä
Ei saa näitä seurata

You can't have these days
You can't follow them

Palavana paperina
Sataa maahan tarina
Johon meidät kirjoitettiin
Palavia palasia
Joiden vaurioissa
Katoavat sydänäänet

As burning paper
A story falls to the ground
in which we were written
Burning pieces
in whose damage
'heart sounds' are lost**

Vielä tunnen suurta vihaa
Mutten muista ketä kohtaan
Veistä haavassa kääntäisin
Pelkästään siksi miltä se tuntuu

I still feel a lot of hate
But I can't remember whom I hated
I'd turn the knife in the wound
Just because of how it feels

Ei saa näitä jälkiä
Ei saa näitä seurata

You can't have these tracks
You can't follow them

Chorus
Bit of Chorus
Chorus

*Also means "injuries"
** Seriously, if a finn can come up with a better word, go right ahead :D
