Heh, a parody, but the sad thing is that it's only ever so slightly detectable :P. (Hip hop music videos are the most uncreative things out there for real, too :boring: ;).)

Heh, parodia, mutta ikävä kyllä sen huomaa vain juuri ja juuri :P. Hiphop-musiikkivideot ovat epäkekseliäintä tavaraa mitä löytyy, ihan oikeastikin :boring: ;).)

Hello, I'm *very* new here, but I had to add to this thread. :)

My favorite Finnish-language bands are:

Viikate (hard rock)
Kotiteollisuus (industrial metal)
Turmion Kätilöt (electronic industrial metal maybe?)
Ruoska (elec. ind. metal of a slightly different sort )

but really most of all Viikate and Kotiteollisuus.
Viikate - Tie
Kotiteollisuus - Iankaikkinen

Minä rakastan suomalaisen musiikin.
(I truly hope that says "I love Finnish music" because I do ;), but I really am a complete beginner with the language.)

I love these bänds a lot :D Mokoma, Maj Karma, Kivimetsän druidi, Ensiferum (they only have a couple of songs in Finnish :( ), Neitsyt and Stam1na are good as well :) I also can't help recommending two wonderful bands that sing in English: Charon and Embraze :D

Outoa. En huomannut, että olit kirjoittanut sekä suomeksi että englanniksi. Luulin, että olit kirjoittanut sen vahingoksi kaksi kertaa :D Kai se on hyvä merkki :?:

No, unohdan aika usein millä kielellä jokin on sanottu.

    Siiri Nordin: Viimeinen palanen

Okay, I guess this doesn't really fit here but I didn't want to give it its own thread.

You may know the (annoying) song by Rihanna called Umbrella.

Here's the youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=q8Az0qxQMxM (start from 00:57)

Well, I realised that the word "tampereella" fits really well in there, so I made up my own words. Here they are.

Naisijärvi on pyhäjärveä korkeempaa
Kustaa perusti sen koskelle
Muumilaaksoonhan mä meen
Nokian tunnen (mut) pirkanmaata en
Naisijärvi on pyhäjärveä korkeampaa
Kustaa perusti sen koskelle
Tulkaa dokaamaan Tampereella
Syömään makkaraa Tampereella
moro moro moro

So they're a tad off, but I don't care, this was amusing.

Moi!

Minun suomalaista lempiyhtyeet ovat nyt:

Viikate; Kotiteollisuus; Maj Karma; 51koodia; Sydän, sydän; Turmion Kätilöt

Tykkään myös:
Happoradio, CMX, Ruoska, Apulanta, Timo Rautiainen, Uniklubbi, Egotrippi, Korpiklaani, ja jokunen lisää....

Kuuntelen hyvin paljon suomalaista musiikkia nyt. Minä yritän puhua/kirjoittaa jopa viimein! (mutta olen varma, että monesti erehdyn.....)

Then there are the artists like Juice Leskinen, Leevi & the Leavings, Eppu Normaali etc. What makes them interesting is the fact how most of the Finnish population actually knows so many of their songs, knows the melody and can even a bit sing along. Maybe getting some collection from them could be the best, with the individual cds it's a bit hard to know from where to start.

For me their texts very often represent unusually clever observation of the Finnish society. Very sarcastic and honest songs.

Then Dave Lindholm also has made lots of beautiful songs, from the modern artists I could mention YUP, Zen Cafe and Maija Vilkkumaa. Magyar Posse is also excellent.

Also really worth of listening are the works Vesa-Matti Loiri has made with the poems of Eino Leino. How the cd's were called, I think just Leino I, Leino II etc. The first one is clearly the best in my opinion, though the others also have their moments. Quite recent cover-album Inari has also been interesting.

:)

thanks for the suggestions, I will check them out. I do already have a couple Leevi and the Leavings albums and one so far by Zen Café. Good stuff on both counts. :)

I actually bought the recent tribute album to Leevi & the Leavings (Melkein vieraissa) before hearing any of their songs purely because there were covers done by 4 artists I know and love (I found it because of Viikate's single "Orret" which has "Teuvo, maanteiden kuningas" as a b-side) and I figured there was a good chance there might be other bands there that I would like, and it worked: out of 18 tracks I love 10, but even with the 8 I don't particularly like, I was still seriously impressed by the music... so I bought a couple albums of originals even though it is not the style I usually listen to.......

I figured it was a cultural investment even if I didn't end up liking them, but I shouldn't have worried. ;)

The dangerous part of all of this is that I am finding that everyone keeps telling me the lyrics are the best part, the lyrics are what makes the music, and, well, it is music and lyrics that changed me from a person who thought, "oh, Finnish? interesting language, I suppose..." to the semi-obsessed being I am today. ;) so it all just fuels the desire to understand.... (and I get all happy when I suddenly realise I understood some simple little phrase in a song, it is very sad really )

unfortunately, in spite of my obsession, my studies are going very slowly. but I am starting to have more time now so I am hoping to improve... eventually.... ;)

The more I listen to Finnish, the more I think this language IS music in itself.

Aah, suomen kauneus...
