Antea - Czech

Postby Antea » 2019-08-06, 11:00

I have decided that it would be better to make some kind of schedule for the languages I am learning. Because if I don't, I have the feeling that I will feel overwhelmed and all will be a mess.

So, for learning Czech I am using an old edition of Teach Yourself, and I will be doing 1 Unit per day. I think it is perfectly doable. Today I am starting with the first lesson, Introductions.

I will also try to gain some vocabulary with the association word game in this section. When I will have a little more vocabulary, I wil try to look for some basic videos in order to practice listening and pronounciation.

Do you mean if it is an app? It’s a book, and I think for beginners it’s Ok.

I am in Lesson 13 now. It’s becoming more complicated to follow the texts on the lessons, because the level is increasing and there’s a lot of new vocabulary and also the grammatical structure that I am still not very used to.

For example, the text comprehension on Lesson 13 was not a dialogue, as usual, but a text from a Czech writer and poet called J. Hora, from his book Dech na skle.

After the initial frustration of not being able to understand it very well (just the general sense), I realised that I really don’t know very much about Czech literature (apart from Kafka, but Kafka wrote in German). So I started to look up for some information about this author and others. And that lead me to discover Karel Čapek and R.U.R.

Of course, I still don’t have the level to read it in Czech, but I use the translations and I compare them with the original text, which is helping me with the language and also motivates me.

It’s another world of possibilities for me, and I would like to know more of Czech literature or poetry and if any of you has a favourite author I will be pleased to know about it :yep:

Very popular writer in these days is Alena Mornštajnová. The most famous Czech poetry is Máj by Karel Hynek Mácha, from 19. century but I think every Czech can say the beginning by memory. Kytice by Karel Jaromír Erben, book with several beautiful ballads, old and famous too. I like reading science fiction and my favourite writers are Josef Pecinovský nad Ondřej Neff and of course Čapek and, besides R.U.R., his Válka s mloky and Krakatit.
