Postby mssccb84 » 2006-07-04, 1:09

Ahoj! Jak se máte? Můžete mě pomáhat? Can I have the following words translated in to Czech? I tried using an online dictionary but it gave me several Czech words for each English word. Děkuji!

to call (on the phone)
to stand up
to stand
to watch
to close
to open
to listen
to sit
to sit down
to miss
to kiss
to hug
to wake up
to go to bed
to get up (out of bed)
to run

Ahoj, já se mám dobře. A ty? Nejdřív si dovolím drobné opravy (First, I'll take the liberty to correct your sentence):
Můžete mě pomáhat? -> Můžete mi/mně pomoct?

And now, the translation although it's gonna be a bit hard since it may differ according to the sence of the sentence. Somewhere I'm giving both forms of completive (C) and imperfective (I) aspects:

to call (on the phone) - volat (I), zavolat (C)
to stand up - postavit se (C); vstát (C)
to stand - stát (I)
to watch - dívat se (I); pozorovat (I); sledovat (I)
to close - zavřít (C), zavírat (I)
to open - otevřít (C), otevírat (I)
to listen - poslouchat (I), naslouchat (I)
to sit - sedět (I), sednout si (C)
to sit down - posadit se (C), sednout si (C)
to miss - chybět (I) (I miss you = Chybíš mi {lit. You are missed to/by me})
to kiss - políbit (C), líbat (I)
to hug - obejmout (C), objímat (I)
to wake up - probudit se (vzbudit se) (C), probouzet se (I)
to go to bed - jít spát, jít si lehnout, jít do postele (all C, I since the verb jít is a big exception  )
to get up (out of bed) - vstát (C), vstávat (I)
to run - běžet (C), běhat (I)

Completive and imperfective verbal aspects are used differently. The knowledge of how and when to use them is BMO one of the most difficult things to learn. If you need our help to comprehend the difference, feel free!
