Use of расти

Postby paul_a_j » 2014-03-02, 19:51

Evening All

Can I use расти for both animate and inanimate subjects?
For example in saying where I grew up:
Я рождал и рос в городе Хуле но сейчас я живу в Манчестере.
And that a city rapidly grew:
Манчестер в восемнадцатом веке быстро рос.

P.S.
Why is it рос and not росл?
Cheers Paul

Yes, sure.
Я рождал родился и вырос(?) в городе Хуле, но сейчас я живу в Манчестере.

Рождать = to give birth to
родиться = to be born

If you grew up in your home town and left it being adult, you need to use вырос.
P.S.
Why is it рос and not росл?

Why is it went and not goed? :)

In other words, not all Russian verbs are regular in the past tense.

Isn't this change quite a regular one, though? According to this page, the ending (without a following vowel) is dropped after consonants other than д т в й м н, thus рос, смог, пёк etc.

Isn't it funny that Polish having for most speakers shifted the sound value of ‛ł’ from [ɫ] to [w] keeps the final in all verbs in the spelling and often in speech, too (depends on the register and speech rate), while Russian despite having preserved the lateral pronunciation of the phoneme drops it after a consonant (it should be more pronounceable than the Polish Cw# after all)?

Is it? Maybe if you turn it into a syllabic consonant, English-style, but not as part of a cluster, I think.
