Russian grammar

Postby kman1 » 2006-05-08, 11:56

I have a few questions about Russian grammar. I'll post three or four questions at a time and I'll post the other ones after those. Ok first,:

1. What are the rules/conjugations for words like 'Весь'? I thought that 'Весь' was the only form until I saw 'всеми' which is a different form of 'Весь'.
2. How do I use 'Надо'? What are the rules for this as well? I read it somewhere but I don't know how to use it.
3. I don't understand how accents work at all in Russian. I found a link that kinda explains it but I still don't understand. All I know is:
"As a rule of thumb, strong consonant stems have end accent while stems on й tend to have stem accent" but I don't even know what that means. Can someone explain Russian accents in simple terms please? (btw, here's the link I was referring to:
http://www.alphadictionary.com/rusgrammar/accent.html
4. Can someone explain negative pronouns as well?
http://www.alphadictionary.com/rusgrammar/negative.html
5. “Кстати, если я неправильно скажу какое-нибудь слово, скажи мне, какое именно слово я сказал неправильно.” In this sentence, I don’t understand how to use ‘какой’

If you need me to provide any additional information or examples, let me know and I'll show you what I'm talking about. Thanks!! 8)

I don't know exactly what you want to know but here are a few examples: http://lingvo.yandex.ru/en?text=%D0%9D%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BE&lang=en&search_type=lingvo&st_translate=1

I don't think that I can help you with your other questions. :(

5. “Кстати, если я неправильно скажу какое-нибудь слово, скажи мне, какое именно слово я сказал неправильно.” In this sentence, I don’t understand how to use ‘какой’

The какой here is used just like in the English, "which": "...tell me which word exactly I said incorrectly". And because the word "слово" has neutral gender какой takes the ending -ое.

The same with the какой in какое-нибудь, where the нибудь-ending changes the "which" into "some".

Awesome explanations! Does anyone have any responses to questions #4 accents & #5 negative pronouns?

P.S. - so 'весь' conjugates like an adj.?

- what do the underlined words 'кем' and 'там' mean?
2. Тебе не нужны женщины
- Тебе нужны is this a special phrase or something?? how is it used? (tense, etc.)
3. если бы тебе была нужна женщина, она бы у тебя уже была
- how are 'была' and 'y' used in this sentence?
- what does 'тебя уже была' mean?
4. когда мы в следующий раз пойдем в клуб
- what does 'пойдем' mean?
5. Когда я увидел, что он разговаривает с женщинами, то я не поверил в это

Obviously I'm a beginner in Russian so... I don't know what to do with the links you posted since they are both in Russian... I just wanna know what those words mean, I already looked them up in my dictionary but the definition doesn't make any sense.

Those links are Russian-English-Russian (and some other languages as well) dictionnaries. You simply type a word, press "enter" and you ll get a translation, English is always set as a starning page, so you don't have to choose anything.

Here are some other questions I have:

1. он ни с кем там не разоваривал
- what do the underlined words 'кем' and 'там' mean?
КЕМ is instrumental case for KTO (who)
TAM=there

2. Тебе не нужны женщины
- Тебе нужны is this a special phrase or something?? how is it used? (tense, etc.)
yes, i guess it is speciall
dative case+нужно/надо = Someone/something needs

3. если бы тебе была нужна женщина, она бы у тебя уже была
- how are 'была' and 'y' used in this sentence?
Была is kind of auxilary verb here (feminin gender because there s женщина
У - is part of fixed expression -
у + genitive + to be in appropriate form + accusative = someone/something has
- what does 'тебя уже была' mean?
it doesnt make sence without "y" - together it means - you have already had

4. когда мы в следующий раз пойдем в клуб
- what does 'пойдем' mean?
we'll go

5. Когда я увидел, что он разговаривает с женщинами, то я не поверил в это
- what does 'то' and 'в' mean?
they have many meanings in English, here I wouldn't translate TO at all, B=in in most cases

6. Но это было так
- what does 'так' mean?
so

I would say, кем is more of "anybody" here. I suppose, the translation "who" can be confusing for a beginner... :?
