To me that implies that they tasted the water and were expecting it not to be salty.

I'm guessing it's basically like saying it's a chicken-and-egg question or a futile argument. It's not clearly specified whether angels are male or female, so you could see it either way. Same with whether chickens came from eggs or vice versa and whether correctness is permanent or changeable.

Bônus: teve uma série (novela) nos anos oitenta chamada O Sexo dos Anjos que era uma alusão a esta frase. Não havia sexo literalmente na história, o personagem principal era um anjo da morte, também chamado na série de emissário que vinha pra Terra buscar a alma das pessoas. Tinha outros anjos/emissários, além da própria morte.
