Can you correct also this passage from Brave New World?

The world's stable now. People are happy; they get what they want, and they never want what they can't get. They're well off; they're safe; they're never ill; they're not afraid of death; they're blissfully ignorant of passion and old age; they're plagued with no mothers or fathers; they've got no wives, or children, or lovers to feel strongly about; they're so conditioned that they practically can't help behaving as they ought to behave. And if anything should go wrong, there's soma.
(Mustapha Mond, the World Controller of Western Europe - Brave New World, Aldous Huxley)

O mundo é estável agora. As pessoas estão felizes; elas obtêm o que querem e nunca querem o que não podem obter. Estão abastadas; estão seguras; nunca estão mal; não têm medo da morte; estão alegramente ignorantes sobre a paixão e os tempos velhos; não têm a praga de uma mãe e de um pai; não têm uma mulher, ou filhos, ou amantes por os que tem sentimentos fortes; estão tão condicionados que basicamente não podem não comportar-se como deveriam. E se algo vai mau, há a soma.

I don't know if you're using an English-Portuguese dictionary, but you had the same problem this time as in the last text with "ask (for)". Same word in English, different ones in Portuguese... :)

lamparina

"Jactar-se" is not wrong, but it's a very rare and literary word (directly from Latin). A more common synonym would be something like "vangloriar-se", "gabar-se".

Also, you need to pay some attention to verbal forms. In one sentence you're using "tu" with the lamp and in the next one you suddenly change to "você"... ;)

That's hard. That's very hard. I once read this: http://www.skoob.com.br/livro/25084-o_lobo_do_espaco

And this one, juvenile and obsolete: http://www.skoob.com.br/livro/5655-os_p ... _do_futuro and veeery based on DC Comics Legion.

It seems Romance-speaking writers don't really like sci-fi...

You mean readers won't buy. Or publishers won't publish, as I see the thing in Brazil.

When I first saw this, I thought "what about Paulo Coelho?" just because he wrote a fictional book called The Alchemist that I have in Malayalam but never actually bothered to read. Wow, that was a long sentence.

I've translated a short story from a book called Racconti dei Saggi dell'India. I'd appreciate it if someone would correct and improve it. (I haven't written the original because it's in Italian).

---

PEGADAS

-Senhor, porqué me havia abandonado?
Olha como estava mal, que sozinho que estava!

Dios, sempre próximo dele, respondeu:

-olha melhor as pegadas dos passos, quando estavas alegre, estava ao teu lado, pero quando sofreste, quando te esgotavas em enfrentar as deficuldades do mundo e não podía estar de pé, te portava no braço*

I've just realized how little I know the (European) Portuguese pronunciation (in fact I know almost nothing), so I'm probably going to post a few questions here in the days to come, the first ones:

1) Is there a rule (or at least a rule of thumb) as to when I should pronounce the R as [ɾ] or [ʁ]?
2) Is there a rule (or at least a rule of thumb) as to when I should pronounce the E as [e], [i] or [ə]?
3) When is O pronounced as [u]? (Only when it is in an unstressed syllable?)
4) Is the i only [i] or also [ɪ]? And if so, when?
5? Is the final S always pronounced as [ʃ]?
