A thread like this exists, but it's relatively old and the discussion there has veered off the topic quite a bit.

So!

I've recently watched Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês (How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman) by Nelson Pereira dos Santos. Set in the 16th century, it records the life of a captive Frenchman who, after an 8-month period, will be served for dinner to a cannibalistic (and nudist ) tribe of the Tupinambás Indians. Netflixable.

Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loura (Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl) deserves a mention. Very old-fashioned (well, Manoel de Oliveira is 102 y.o. ), but in a quaint rather than outdated sort of way. The stylistic elements of God knows what century and decade definitely piqued my interest.

Has anyone seen Do Começo ao Fim (From Beginning to End) by Aluisio Abranches? An intimate brotherly bond turning into incestuous gay softcore porn sounds interesting, but it has been described as too much of a fairytale. Does that really take away from the movie?

Any suggestions of weird/old/forgotten gems or new releases are quite welcome!

Oh, well, I once said in other post that there are good Brazilian movies. Two of them. Now there's tree, because of Tropa de Elite 2.

Now, while Cidade de Deus is widely understood and reconized as true art, most people outside Brazil miss the point of Tropa de Elite because they don't know how realistic the movie is. And what it represents in Brazilian actual context.
