A label on a tiny tee-shirt my daughter got sent from Israel
Pikajew!

The last thing you read that was so unputdownable that it kept you awake at night.
(and yes, I've seen that word somewhere!)

Gruppenbild mit Damen by Heinrich Böll. Though I had to think about it; the subject doesn't come up as often as you might think given that the section I'm reading now focuses on the early years of WWII. Technically, it only mentions one Jew, an odd and brilliant young woman with a strangely-defined role at a convent school who is only later revealed to be a Jew in hiding.

The last thing you read that quoted a theologian.

That must have been Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I have virtually no patience for it, let alone for the insistence in school curricula on including it.
linguoboy wrote:The last thing you read that quoted a theologian.

Quoted a theologian, eh?

Unless it's possible to argue that The Poisonwood Bible features a number of amateur theologians, that would probably have to be O homem que calculava by Malba Tahan (pen name of Brazilian writer and mathematics professor Júlio César de Mello e Souza), translated into English as The Man Who Counted by Leslie Clark and Alistair Reed. It quotes from a number of people, including Plato, who I guess could be considered a theologian. One of the characters in the book is also a (fictional) theologian.

The last thing you read whose author was not writing in their native language.

I guess I'll go with my previous answer to that same question and say O homem que calculava by Malba Tahan again. :P

The last thing you read that involved rice in some way.

A note from my daughter's teacher : "the day of the bowl of rice will take place on the...."
(that's a day kids do not eat the usual dish at the canteen but have a bowl of rice and an apple instead) 8-)

The last thing you read featuring a gay character playing an important part.

That would be some joke from 1001 Great Jokes: From the Delightfully Droll to the Truly Tasteless by Jeff Rovin. (They're not great). Unless of course porn video descriptions count. :P I don't think I've ever read any real literature involving anyone gay at all, my own sexuality and legendary ownership of a Czech gay romance novel ( ) notwithstanding.

The last thing you read with any Chinese in it.

"Safely home". The book is in English, but the events take place in China, so there are some Chinese words in dialogs (spelled in English alphabet though).

The last thing you read in which events took place in a fictional world.

Yakshi by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan ends in a fictional world (the world of demonesses known as yakshis), so I guess that would be it.

The last thing you read that was set (at any point in the plot) in the 1950s.

Early 50s... Ken follett's Century Trilogy, book 2 : Winter of the world.

The last thing you read featuring some language a little too rude for your own liking.

Leaving aside Reddit comments, forum posts, remarks from other people and one robot, and I guess porn again, that would probably be the original lyrics to "Oh! Susanna."

The last thing you read that was set in Germany.

Berlin 1989 by George Marion... Of course. As a research material for my book "Berlin-Est" :)
So I guess I can also quote myself  Berlin-Est!

The last thing you read and wrote a comment about on a website.

Unless this website counts, I guess that would be the instructions on a package of some type of noodles in Japanese that was posted on r/translator. :P

The last thing you read in which either communism or social reform (or both) was mentioned.

I think there must be one in the book I've read not a long time ago - Sushi for beginners by Marian Keyes.

The last thing you read that made you angry because you totally disagreed.
