some handy tips to increase your vocabulary

Postby languagepotato » 2013-02-18, 12:42

i've got a few tips to increase your vocabulary in dutch drastically

with words in english that end -ical or -ic just change it to -isch:
this works 90% of the time
alfabetisch, drastisch, automatisch
some exceptions: classical --> klassiek, public --> openbaar
but in general when in doubt, use this trick

same goes for words in english that end in -tion, just change that to tie (pronounced almost the same as the english see)
this doesn't work always either, but often it does

and last but not least: learn false friends.

i made a tiny mistake, i had to say adjectives
also, as i said it doesn't work all the time but it works quite often
also, ph is phonetically f so change the ph in f, just as in phonetic-->fonetisch
also, i need to add: if it doesn't work, first try -iek, and if that doesn't work then -itisch
again, it doesn't work always but most of the time it does

catholic > catholisch - katholiek
clerical > clerisch - klerikaal
colic > colisch - koliek
colonic > colonisch -
copacetic > copacetisch - ?
eccentric > eccentrisch - excentriek
farcical > farcisch - farcicaal
frolic > frolisch ~ vrolijk
identical > identisch - identiek
islamic > islamisch - islamitisch
lackadaisical > lackadaisisch -
lambic > lambisch - lambiek
mic > misch - (mirco)
periodical > periodisch - periodiek
physical > physisch - fysiek
radical > radisch - radikaal

specific > specifisch - specifiek
tonic > tonisch - (tonicum)

userpic > userpisch - :rotfl:

Even if -ic -> -isch holds true most of the time, -iek (from French -ique, I presume) is common enough for you to pay special attention to it

Knows also (a bit): English, German, Turkish, Danish

Corrections appreciated.
