Understanding other Romance languages ? ? ?

Postby Levike » 2013-04-30, 16:22

I am very curious how much does French help you with understanding other Romance languages.
So let's play a game:
Look at the following sentences in Romanian and tell me how much do you understand ?

1. Maria s-a pierdut repede în castel pentru că totul era construit ca un labirint.

2. Vecina și-a cumpărat o casă nouă, aproape de coastă, cu vedere la mare.

3. Sora mea a desenat un arbore foarte frumos.

4. Somniferele te ajută dacă nu poți dormi.

5. Ursul e cel mai periculos animal din Transilvania.

Please guess the meaning of these and don't look at the others.
Don't cheat !

Marie s'est perdue..(repede?)... dans un château qui était construit comme un labyrinthe.

La voisine s'est acheté une nouvelle maison, près de la côte, avec vue sur la mer.

Ma soeur... un arbre...

Les somnifères t'aident à pouvoir dormir.

L'ours est l'animal le plus dangereux de la Transylvanie.

I'm not a monolingual French speaker anyway....
Par exemple, l'enfant croit au Père Noël. L'adulte non. L'adulte ne croit pas au Père Noël. Il vote.

I don't think French really helps here, but Italian definitely does. (cumparat > comprare, casa, noua > nova, vedere la mare > vedere il mare). I bet a monolingual French speaker wouldn't understand at all this sentence.

Maria s-a pierdut repede în castel pentru că totul era construit ca un labirint.
> Marie s'est perdue (repede ?) dans un chateau (pentu ?) qui était construit comme un labyrinthe

Sora mea a desenat un arbore foarte frumos
> la soeur a dessiné (?) un arbre avec des fruits forts ? (I know that foarte means beautiful (beau), but it's closer to French "fort" (strong)).

Somniferele te ajută dacă nu poți dormi.
> les somnifères t'aident à dormir (again, here ajuta can be understood thanks to Spanish or Portuguse, not French. But we guess the meaning (sominifères, dormir).)

Ursul e cel mai periculos animal din Transilvania.
> Les ours sont les animaux les plus dangereux de Transsylvanie. (though I used italian/Portuguese/Spanish there for "periculos") Note that Ursule is a feminine surname, hence a possible confusion (Ursule is the most dangerous animal of Transsylvania soudns funny, isn't it ? :) )

.........Conversational: Catalan (ca) Catalan, Spanish (es) Spanish

@Levente.Maier: An advice. I see you've made similar threads in other Romance-language forums, so if you want to target the Romance-language speakers, use the General Language forum instead. It's just that we don't really allow duplicate topics, but please do not worry since I can understand you're new here. Ok? Just so you know how we do things here.
