גשם או מטר ??

Postby Brzeczyszczykiewicz » 2020-04-24, 22:53

While I love the fact that there's more than one word for "rain" in Hebrew, I do wonder if there's any difference between the two; is one of them more formal or a more literary or scientific term? Or is it just a matter of preference?

Thanks!

Are you asking about modern Hebrew or Biblical? מטר is a Biblical word, whereas גשם is used almost exclusively in modern Hebrew.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Sorry, I was indeed asking about Modern Hebrew.
So, using "מטר" in Modern Hebrew could be a bit like ,say, using "heavens" in English instead of "sky"?

מטר in the [literal] sense of 'rain' is indeed rare outside the context of religious/biblical discussion, but still used figuratively in Modern Hebrew to mean 'barrage' or 'outpour'.
