Hebrew Resources

Postby księżycowy » 2018-03-05, 19:09

I figured it was time that we shared our resources for those who are interested in Hebrew, but don't know what to turn to. Please feel free to share your resources!

It would be helpful to explain what type of resource it is and a bit about what it is, if it's not immediately obvious. A brief word about the methodology and/or giving a quick review for learning materials is appreciated, but not necessary. Also please put a link to where the resource may be obtained (whether from an online store like Amazon, or a link to the page where it may be viewed or downloaded).

Please be respectful of international copyright laws! Only share links to online resources that do not contain pirated material. I will remove anything I feel does not adhere to these laws. Thank you! :)

I would like to do similar to my other subforums and have a masterlist as the first post, so I'll happily put things here that you like me to. That way noöne has to hunt down a particular resource in the posts. I'll split the list into Biblical, Rabbinical and Modern Hebrew, so that people who are looking for a particular variant can find what they are looking for more easily. Entries within a section (such as "textbooks") will be ordered alphabetically by author's name or title (depending on information available).

As this list grows, please feel free to use the search function on your browser to find things.

Please note, this is not meant to be an exhaustive list. Simply a collect of resources that users find particularly helpful or good.

http://www.pealim.com - mostly a verb conjugator, can't imagine learning Hebrew without it :P

https://www.teachmehebrew.com - lots of good stuff here, but my favorite is the Hebrew frequency list (10,000 most common words)

Note that no special fonts or keyboards are needed for Rabbinic Hebrew, since it doesn't use any extra characters or markings that are not used in Biblical or Modern Hebrew.

Modern Hebrew dictionaries:
  • http://www.morfix.co.il/en/ (online English-Hebrew and Hebrew-English with vowels)
  • Milon Even Shoshan (comprehensive Hebrew-Hebrew dictionary with accurate vowels even in the definitions; I recommend buying it in Israel, I can't find it online for a reasonable price; also, I recommend the 2009 single-volume compact edition, "Milon Even Shoshan HaMerukaz")

Modern Hebrew verb conjugation charts:
  • Asher Tarmon, Ezri Uval. Hebrew Verb Tables. [Buy: Amazon]

Yeah, I just thought it would look awkward to leave that section out there. I intended to have it say, "See 'Fonts and Keyboards' Section under Biblical Hebrew" or something to that effect.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Rabbinic Hebrew usually has the niqqud written, right?

Really any font for Modern Hebrew should work as well. There are no cantillation marks, which are really the only reason Biblical Hebrew needs special fonts.

I wouldn't say usually. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on which text, depends on the manuscript or printed edition, etc.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll have it say "Biblical and Modern Hebrew".

This is something for more advanced students of Biblical Hebrew interested in serious exegesis. There is still a discussion going on on the difference between the perfect, the imperfect, the imperfect consecutive and the perfect consectutive. After working with Hebrew for a while, I found Jan Joosten's "The Verbal System of Biblical Hebrew" very enlightening.
Another good book on the subject: Ellen van Wolde (Ed). Narrative Syntax and the Hebrew Bible.

Thanks! I love the audio, the narrator speaks at a very comfortable pace :)

Stories for children from around the world translated to Hebrew. I would recommend it to intermediate learners and you might need a dictionary in order to understand rare words.

Those two TV shows were specifically made for learners of Hebrew. בוא נתערב is short and easy to understand as soon as you reach a low intermediate level, I'd say, while 23FM is still a struggle for me. The fun thing about 23FM is that it has a language focus with topics such as slang or formal language. Additional videos can be found on youtube by typing the names into the search bar.

I'm taking a break from grammar and am working trough Ora Brand's Reader Modern Hebrew Prose and Poetry. It's for Intermediate readers, not for beginners, but is much more interesting than the texts in the grammar book!
