Two present tense forms

Postby Lemanensis » 2015-06-03, 17:48

Hi
In Barron's 501 Hebrew Verbs there are many verbs with 2 present tense forms in pa'al binyan.
E.g.
קונה, קונה, קונים, קונות
and
קנוי, קנויה, קנויים, קנויות
Could someone explain the difference to me, please. Preferably with examples...
תודה לכם
Martin

Hi! Those are called statal passives (they are not necessarily passive though), or simply adjectives that are the result of an completed action.
Examples:
the floor is שטופה, because sb washed it שטף
the table is set ערוך, because sb set it ערך
These statal passives have three forms: Pa'ul (סגור) Mefu'al (מבושל) and Muf'al (מודאג).
You can also see the correlation between these and Huf'al and Pu'al, that in present from serve as statal passives.

Beginner: (ar) (es)

Thank you, Mikey! Now I know that I know what to look up in the grammar!

(I think you're underselling yourself if you say you're level Bet in Hebrew!)
Take care

Well, I didn't know these were called "statal passives" :P
Just to add a bit on Mikey's explanation: the Hebrew conjugation pa'al indeed has two participles, a present active one (קונה) and a past passive one (קנוי). Conjugation pi'el and hif'il use the participles of pu'al and huf'al, respectively, as their passive forms.
Conjugation nif'al often serves as the passive of pa'al, but its participle has only a present meaning, for instance:
אוכל קנוי = bought food, food which was bought
אוכל נקנה = food being bought (right now).
I hope this wasn't confusing :)

Thank you both. It's clear now.

There seems to be no distinction made in Barron's - they're both under the 'present tense'.
