Book for self study

Postby Dalpjin » 2015-05-24, 20:39

Shalom Chaverim!

I want to learn modern Hebrew, but I don't really know yet where to start, so
that's why I am here.

Unfortunately, I have, mostly, not so much time in a week to learn things and my free time is different every week,
so that's why I need a self study. I'm looking for a book (if there are things like audio with it, it's alright, but it isn't a must). What do you guys recommend?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm not a native English speaker, so I might talk a little bit odd. Excuse me for that.

Colloquial Hebrew is a good place to start.

Also, Assimil's L'Hébreu is pretty good if you speak French.

Thanks for the quick reaction,

As my French is not that good, I think I'll try colloquial hebrew.
Is it only a book or audio, etc. too?

P.S. If you have other/extra suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

Thanks.

Do I need another vocabulary or grammar book too, if I use colloquial hebrew, or is everything to
get a good basis in the book?

Just wanted to add that Assimil has translated their Hebrew textbook into English now. And it's an excellent text in my opinion.

And to answer your question, the lessons themselves are self contained (dialogues, vocab, grammar all included). For both texts for that matter. Though a good dictionary and grammar is always a good idea, for after your lessons anyway.

Having tried many books, I'd say that Colloquial Hebrew is not that great for starters. The vocabulary is very much in-depth from lesson one - more in-depth than most beginners need. I'd say (as a pro linguist) it's more like a second-year university language book (where you go through all the grammar again and deepen your vocabulary).

I'm currently over half-way through Routledge and it is very good, with audio-visual materials on the university website.

You'll find lots of resources on my website too! :-)
