To Hebrew speakers *SHALOM* 8)

I wonder if you can write my name Daniel in Hebrew and also "Hello, my name is Daniel and this is my bedroom." and "Get lost!" or "Go away!"

I ask cos I'd like to put them up on my bedroom door

Thank you!

Daniel in Hebrew is : דניאל

"Hello my name is Daniel " ; " שלום ,שמי דניאל "
"this is my bedroom " ; " זה החדר שלי "
"get lost"/ go away " ( "fly way from here " ): " אוף מפה
"
(but thats a very rude way to say it !!! ,is there some one u dont like??? )

well......, you`r name is a problem ,there are no spelling rules for
the name Luis ,and it can be writed in more than one way in Hebrew .

לויס, לאויס, לואיס,לאואיס,לואס

but I think the most easy way to be readable right should be: " לואיס "

this one can be readed in less ways than the others .

Some corrections

Postby Lynch » 2002-09-02, 0:17

Hey!
1st of all, I'm back! how are you all? many new names...
:)
OkAy, now, Nulnuk, my dear friend, you have a mistake there...
(Make sure you see hebrew rectangular characters and not latin weird letters)
Daniel
דניאל
exactly as Nulnuk put it

This is my room
זה החדר שלי
Read: Ze a heder sheli (Read as spanish, try reading the 'h' in the second word raspier, like the 'ch' in the word 'Loch')

Get outta here
עוף מכאן
Read: oof me kahn (read as english)
Here nulnuk was mistaken by thinking the first letter (hebrew is read from right to left) was 'Alef' when infact, as you see, it is 'Ain' (which sound almost the same).

Louis? Nulnuk's right
לואיס
is the most correct form of your name, and no, nobody will mistaken it for something else...

Anyone else ?

Well, Thanks. I hope not. It's hard to guess the meaning when you leave the vowels out.

By the way, does any of you know of a good website or online resource to learn Hebrew (Modern Hebrew, not that Biblical Hebrew with Nekudot )

I've had an interest in Hebrew for several years now, but I never really found the material to learn it.

I just know the alphabet :-( , but nothing to go from there...

Learning hebrew

Postby Lynch » 2002-09-03, 1:59

Hey.
I'm very glad to hear you wish to learn hebrew, you'll find it as a very interesting and rich tongue, one in which the bible was written in. And believe me, I studied basic bible stuff in highschool (mandatory), it was very interesting, as the hebrew language uses a very peculiar mechanism to create words, there's no pointless word in the whole bible! Almost every word can be further studied, it's indeed a literature masterpiece!

This site is the first I found that has lot's of hebrew stuff in it
http://hebrew.about.com/cs/hebrew

I would be also very happy to help you out, my ICQ is
81340220

It's "Agathokakological"

Hebrew sites

Postby Mara » 2002-09-03, 17:06

Lynch, that Hebrew site at About.com is sure fine, but, unfortunately, it's just a reduced version of what it was a year ago. I actually downloaded a list of 1000 most useful Hebrew words from that site a year ago (and, boy, how glad I am I did it!! It's gone now!).

Luis, I'll check my bookmarks at home tonight and suggest more useful sites for learning Hebrew. The fact is that there are not so many of them out there. At least not many sites where you can learn for free. I am sure I can give you good tips (I've been learning Hebrew, both Biblical and Modern, for about two years now, so my bookmark list is rather extensive). Also, I will be able to suggest some nifty freeware for your learning progress. :D

(To be continued.)

I'm also interested in learning Hebrew, how could y'all help me?! I've colected some resources, but they're not enough, specially for the alphabet, i want detailed lessons about alphabet but they only give me an alphabet table.
Mega: There are good non-English Hebrew teaching sites...There's a Brazilian one which is very complete, and also many resources in Spanish and French (i didn't go checking the German ones).
Learning Georgian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Papiamentu from scratch. Trying to brush up my Norwegian up to an advanced level.

Few links

Postby Mara » 2002-09-05, 4:33

I promised some links but right now don't have enough time to check which ones are still active. So, just to begin with something, here are those that I am sure about.

1. Davar, a nice freeware Hebrew dictionary. It's predominantly focused on Biblical Hebrew since it includes, e.g., full text of Pirkei Avot or Online Bible, but you can create your own dictionary (and that one which is included, is useful as well). It's also in Spanish version. Go to http://rain.prohosting.com/davar/

2. Another free application for learning Hebrew vocabulary is Foundation Stone at http://foundationstone.com.au/ Very nice, you can create your own lists of words, and it includes Hebrew tutorial in PDF format (also accessible in html on the web site; the tutorial has a brief explanation of the origin of the Hebrew letters).

I strongly recommend either of the two freeware applications, or even better, both (that's what I did :) )

3. If you want to learn phrases used by Israelis in their everyday life, go to Passing Phrase at http://www.learnhebrew.org.il/ This is a very good site with many interesting phrases that you should know at least passively. Includes the phrase in Hebrew (vocalization included), audio file with pronunciation, transliteration, English translation and explanation of the meaning.

Sorry, but that's all for tonight, I need to go to bed. More links some other night.
