thanks everyone.
I think i'm going to go with ג'ומאנה
I just wish less letters were necessary. =p It's ok 'cause it's the same amount in English :)

@csjc: Like ILE said, it is a long vowel.
@ILE: /dʒumä:nä/ would be more specific, I think. My name is the same in MSA and colloquial dialects, though in colloquial, sometimes it's /ʒ/ in stead of /dʒ/.. not much of a difference really (unless it's the Egyptian /g/ which I really don't like :P.) Usually, all names are written in the MSA form, but some people, like yourself, like it better when they write their names in the same way they pronounce it (though the majority of names are pronounced the same way in both.) :)
@Strawberry: Thanks for the correction, I gotto pay attention to the shift key :P. And I think this would be my very first self constructed sentence in Hebrew: אני אוהבת תותים :D especially in cheesecake!

ברוכה הבאה ג'ומאנה! :welcome:

Regarding the א: it doesn't actually mark a long vowel - the distinction is made by using different vowel marks (מַ is short, מָ is long) and we don't really distinguish them anyway... However, if it were written ג'ומנה then natives might well have read it "Jumna", so keep the א :wink: That's exactly its purpose here, to indicate a vowel since vowel marks are not used (you'll get to the matres lectionis soon enough!)

תותים זה מצוין :yum: And cool down, BezierCurve :lol: It's actually stawrberry rather than strawberry, don't know why, googled it and only found her accounts in various websites :P

You're welcome :D And don't worry about "stawrberry" - there's a circulating e-mail describing a research in some university, which claims that when reading we identify whole words mostly by the first and last letters, so we would'nt easily notice that letters in the middle of words are scrambled...

That's exactly why I wrote it like Stawrberry and not like Strawberry. :)

Gábor = Gahbor [ga:bor] = גאבור?

שלום!

Yes, that's correct :)
Theoreticaly you could also spell it as גבור, which means a hero/brave, but is read as "gibor". 8-)

Wouldn't that be convenient if only it was pronounced the same... :P

Hello, I heard somewhere that Jonathan is supposed to mean like "gift from God" in Hebrew or something like that. I think it was supposed to be "yehonatayn" or something?
יהונתין?

It's spelt יונתן (shortened form of יהונתן) and just about means "god has given". "Gift from god" is just a nicer way to say it. :)

Sure, just tell us first if anything in them is pronounced differently from English... e.g. "sz" is pronounced differently, isn't it?
