Meera's Korean Thread

Postby Meera » 2017-07-11, 18:10

안녕하세요! [flag=]ko[/flag] [flag=]ko[/flag] [flag=]ko[/flag]

I am starting my own threads for Japanese and Korean because I want to get a good start on both these languages while I have some time off so I am making these threads to help me keep up motivation and so I won't have to spam with questions. (I will probably also post this in the TAC thread).

I am a complete beginner in Korean, I have always been interested in Korean but have never actually tried to learn anything substantial in it. I know it is a very hard language so I am not planning to get very far with it so I am just starting with the basics. Right now I am doing both Coursera courses for Korean. Some other books I am using:

Elementary Korean
Korean from Zero
Living Language Korean (only Essential)

My goals for the summer are only to learn the alphabet, learn some basic phrases and grammar structures. I will update soon of what I have learned so far.

화이팅!

So for the past couple of weeks I have been learning 한글. Although I can not read perfectly, I can read simple words. They are absolutely nothing alike but for some reason learning Hangul reminded me of the first time I started learning Dveanagari, maybe because I just had fun learning it like I had fun doing Hangul :P So anyway here is an overview of what I have learned thus far:

-Hangul Consonants and Vowels

Basic Words - Unit One (From Korean from Zero)

가구
나라
노래
누구
두마
모래
매너
모두
누나
고구마

Basic Words Unit 2

버즈
제대
아기
추스
사유
개미
버개
다지
부츠
고기

Basic Words Unit 3

타다

세계
파티
피사
노트
애기
그녀
커피
야채
히터

Some of these look like typos:
Meera wrote:두마

Do they really talk about the Russian Duma in lesson one?

Meera wrote:추스

Maybe 치즈 "cheese"?

Meera wrote:버개

베개 "pillow"?

Meera wrote:피사

The city of Pisa in Italy?

They are typos, it's the first time I tried using the Korean keyboard. First one is supposed to be "cutting board", I think it's actually supposed to be 도마, second one is supposed to juice 주스, third one is supposed to be pillow 베개, last one is supposed to be pizza and this is actually how they spell it in the book when I doubled checked but google translate gave me 피자.

As a rule, English /z/ is represented by Korean ㅈ. So, yeah, 피사 is an odd choice of han'geulisation. For this reason, instances of /j/ are usually distinguished by being followed with iotised vowels, so I would have expected 쥬스 rather than 주스. But the latter seems to be the standard spelling.

Is this the text by King and Yeon (I can never tell if that's his given or family name)?
Living Language Korean (only Essential)

How are you finding the newer Living Language materials?

Yes by King and Yeon :)

It is pretty good, I only have the blue book but it is really simple and has a script workbook with it so it is helping :)

Let me know what you thought no of King and Yeon's book as you move through it. I'm debating on using that or the KLEAR textbooks. (I mean, given the depth and awesomeness of the KLEAR material, I'll use it regardless. But I'm still curious of King and Yeon's, as I already own the books.)

Yeah I have been considering the KLEAR textbooks too, I was going to get them actually but I didn't know exactly how far I wanted to go with Korean so I didn't know if it was worth it if I just wanted to still be in a beginner stage.

They have a beginner textbook, as I'm sure you know. But I get what you mean.
I intend on taking my Korean (once I get started on it) as far as I can, so I see the series as a bit of a must to tackle at some point in my beginning/intermediate study of the language.

Cool videos by the way. I'm gonna bookmark them for future reference.

That's true, I looked on amazon and they aren't that expensive, I thought they'd be like Al-kitaab or Genki lol
