Parousia의 놀이 (Parousia's Game)

Postby parousia » 2009-10-05, 13:21

야 쫄병들아! 심심하니까 우리같이 좀 노는 게 어떨까? :woohoo:

This is a new game. Here's how you play it: I will come up with a sentence and you tell me what it means. The person who posts the correct meaning first gets 1 point. Your translation does not have to be elegant. As long as you get the basic meaning, you get a point. If you catch me in an error you get FIVE points. You can use a dictionary or a grammar reference, but no googling or machine translation or asking your Korean buddies, etc.  Also, if you don't mind, I would like to come up with the sentences since this is my game. ( :P ) You are welcome to start your own game in another thread or in another language. Of course, after the correct answer has been posted, we can have a discussion about any aspect of the sentence.

Here's the first sentence:

토끼를 쥐가 먹었다.

Answer to #4
동물도 사람처럼 자살을 하나요?
Do animals also commit suicide, like people?

동물 animal
-도 also
사람 person/people (In Korean, the singular form can mean both one or many though there is a way to make the plural, with 들, e.g. 사람들)
-처럼 like
자살suicide
-을 object particle
하- verb stem of 하다 (to do)
(so together you get the verb 자살하다)
-나요 (interrogative ending)

What is interesting about this sentence is that the verb 자살하다 has been broken up with the noun component of the verb (자살) receiving an object particle. It could have had the same meaning without it (동물도 사람처럼 자살하나요). I believe the breaking up of the verb puts some emphasis on 자살 and also more important, makes the sentence more rhythmic. By the way, I got this sentence off of a Korean Q&A board.

For the next exercise, try to make a sentence with the same grammatic elements as the previous question -도, -처럼, -나요 that means:

#5 Are you also hungry, like me?
