Could someone explain the difference or the scope of usage of these colour names::?:
하양 and 흰색
검정 and 까망
초록 and 녹색

You mean that 흰색 and 검정 sound more natural, eg. when I just mention them among more colours?
By the way, is 검정 a short of 검은색 ? I suppose some names don't need 색 obligatorily, and some exist only with it, like 흰색?
Finally, which forms are preferred when colour names are simply quoted (used independently), shortened or ending with ㄴ?
