Vegur/Veggur Homophone?

Postby klaudi » 2010-02-15, 4:45

What is the pronunciation of vegur (way, road) compared with veggur (wall)?
Also, does múr mean the same as veggur?

I'm studying Icelandic slowly but surely. Thanks to you all who help me learn!

One g after a vowel = [j], two g's = [k], so no, they aren't homophones.

Múr is much less commonly used, I've only seen it used in the context of the Berlin wall (Berlínarmúrinn).

I am fairly sure. That Wikipedia article isn't very complete and I'm just relying on what I've heard in Icelanders' speech.

To be more clear:
Veggur ['veg’:ür]
Vegur ['ve: γur] (forget about the [j])

I'll ask an Icelander in the morning to confirm, I can't trust my own memory at this point.

Confirmed (someone was still awake!), the above transcriptions are correct. :P

You're most welcome.

By the way, there seems to be a slight difference between the -ur of the two. For me, the -ur of veggur resembles a [u] just a little bit.

Just like the -u- in morgunn is a little bit closer to a [u] than full [y]. But I'm not completely sure this isn't just in my head.
