So, since it seems as though it's just me at the moment, I'm wondering what to do about this study group. The purpose remains the same as far as I'm concerned: to help and motivate each other. And it's hard to do that alone.

Yes, Vijay, I know you're still willing to help, but let's face it, your probably not getting much out of this. I mean, aside from helping me.

Until another beginner comes along and is interested, I might have to put this study group on hold, unfortunately. :(

EDIT: Made a sentence clearer.

So, this will be my last post in this thread until someone wants to (re)join. I'll start using my personal thread here in the German subforum to post things until such time that this study group is revived. In the meantime, here are my answers to the exercises in Lesson 5(I):

Please feel free to correct either here or in my personal thread. :)

"Misfortune", it's part of the list of things that grow.

Even if you're not sure what "Unglück" means, syntax gives away that it's not an adverbial like "unfortunately". Translating your English sentence back, you'd get "Unglücklicherweise wachsen Nägel und Haare durch das ganze Jahr" (also, as you can see, no comma after adverbials in German, which would be another hint).

6. Fräulein Meier wickelt den Briefträger um den kleinen Finger.
6. Mrs. Meier wraps the mailman around [her] little finger.

Miss Meier, not Mrs. Meier.

6. Seit drei Jahren liest der Student die Philosophie Kants. (Ditto)
6. The student of philosophy reads Kant for three years.

I may be wrong about the English grammar here, but should this be "has been reading"? The sentence implies that he started three years ago and he's still reading.

Also "die Philosophie Kants" belongs together, otherwise it would have to be "der Student der Philosophie".

7. Kinder sind eine Brücke zum Himmel. (Ditto)
7. Children are the bridge towards heaven.

"a bridge"

8. Der Stolz frühstückt mit dem Überfluß, speist zu Mittag mit der Armut und ißt zu Abend mit der Schande.
8. Pride breatfasts with abundance, eats until noon with poverty and eats until night with shame.

Literally "at noon" rather than "until noon" (but really just "lunch"). Same thing with "zu Abend".

Begegnungen looks like a fun book. Shall I ... (cough) ... do it with German?

(It would be Begegnungen B1 if I did, because I studied German for a few months many years ago and I seem to have retained a lot).

I love the series so far!

Unfortunately, I'm not at that level yet. But you sure can do some German. Not like you need my permission.

Maybe I can help you study German, too, voron! Kind of like I do for księżycowy. :)

Sorry, I changed my mind, ich habe keine Zeit, Deutsch zu lernen. :(

Btw I found that a course for Begegnungen B1 is available on Memrise -- in Russian:

The challenge period finished and I'm moving onto German now. However, I'm sorry, but I think I'm going to use another textbook, German for Reading Knowledge, instead of Begegnungen or German Quickly. I just think it's a bit better suited to what I want to do. When I'm done with my textbook then I might tackle German Quickly, but I won't be part of the group anyway...

A "funky style" explanation of four different German language concepts. Nouns have got feelings, too - this is about the four cases. The other concepts are grammatical genders (der, die, das), compound nouns (those that consist of two or more parts) and connotations (whatever is associated with a word).
