księżyc - Deutsch

Hallo alle,
I figured I'd start up a thread for my questions, translation attempts, and other random things I do while trying to achieve a B1(+?) level in German over the next year or so.

I'm working my way through the first chapter of the Begegnungen A1+ textbook, and so far it's pretty easy going. :)

More to come soon!

Anyone want to start up a study group and go through the Begegnungen A1+ textbook together?

Ok, so let's actually start doing something with this thread, shall we?

So I'll use this thread for two things, for translations of texts and for my own compositions.

I'll select texts from one of my dual-language reader for German to start with, and as I progress I'll branch out beyond those. I think I'll start with the appropriately names First German Reader by Steinhauer. I'll just start at the beginning and translate the short poems and such that he starts the book with.

As for compositions, I always have trouble finding interesting things to write about, so I think I'll rely a bit heavily on my textbook to provide topics. Other suggestions are welcome!

I'll post my first round of translations and a composition by Saturday (Aug. 11).

No, you didn't. :P But a little more seriously: How about writing about yourself? Or about both of us? ("Mein Freund heißt Vijay. Er ist eine Sprachenhure. Er ist ein Freund, aber auch ein Feind").

Also, I just added the words that begin with C to your list. :)

Viel Glück!

Glancing at just the first page, I have a feeling there are new words for me in these, too. :o

I also have the English translations on the opposite pages, but I decided it would be better not to copy those too.

You mean "entzückend" isn't used in Duolingo lessons?

It may be, but I can't remember the last time I bothered with Duolingo. :P

So I'm currently reviewing chapter 1, and I have a sentence I'd like to understand better:

Später bin ich Arst.

My current guess is that this means something like, "I will be a doctor."

For context it's from an exercise which goes like this:
Ich studiere Medizin. Später bin ich Arzt.

"Später" means "later" (i.e. in the future, in this context).

"will be" is probably the best translation, even if the German sentence uses the present tense (we just don't like the future tense, present is good enough if you can infer the future meaning from context).

So, with the present of the German study group being uncertain, I'll post this here.

I've been contemplating either switching back to Begegnungen, or using it along side Reading German. If I used it exclusively, I'd shoot for two lessons a week. If I did it along side Reading German, I'd shot for one-ish lesson a week.

While I do want to develop my reading abilities, I want to use German beyond just reading.

Thoughts Vijay? (Or anyone else, I only specifically ask him because I know he has copies of both textbooks.)

I think I'll stick with Reading German as my main textbook, and I'll incorporate up to a full lesson of Begegnungen a week into my German study schedule.

Wait a minute, I thought Reading German was going pretty quickly for you! So what would be wrong with just polishing that off and then getting back into Begegnungen? :hmm:

Nothing. That's why I decided to maintain that as my main textbook. I'm just going to try to add in some Begegnungen.
