Answer :ja, Ich musste meine schuhe putzen.

Du musstest seine Schuhe putzen. You had to clean his shoes.

Well, since there's a thread about sein, I might as well mention a sentence I got caught up on:
"Ich weiß fernerhin, daß Gold für meinem Bruder und sein Land so reichlich da ist."
Shouldn't this be "seinem Land"? It seems strained to me that the phrase should be coordinated with "Gold."

Both Bruder and Land should be in the accusative case here, as they follow the preposition für:
... für meinen Bruder und sein Land...
Meinem Bruder and seinem Land would be the dative case.

It's not my sentence, but you're right about für of course. It must be a typo for "meinen Bruder." Thanks.
